Fowler recently utilized the X platform to provide an insider glimpse, affirming the conclusion of filming for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The accompanying image depicts the director holding a substantial clapperboard adorned with Shadow, introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s post-credits scene. This development aligns with James Marsden’s earlier confirmation of principal photography wrapping up.
The original Sonic game in the ’90s was a rebuttal to Nintendo’s Mario series, setting the stage for a vast narrative world. The 2020 Sonic movie focused mainly on Sonic and Jim Carrey’s Robotnik, while the 2022 sequel added Knuckles and Tails, broadening the character lineup.
Shadow, akin to Sonic but with his own story and mood, hints at a darker tale in Sonic 3.
In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Shadow arrived much later in the series, debuting a decade after Sonic’s first appearance. He made his initial entrance in Sonic Adventure 2 in 2001, not intended as a permanent addition but as a one-time character. Nonetheless, his mysterious and brooding character struck a chord with fans, resulting in his return in later games and earning his standalone spinoff in 2005.

Additionally, Metal Sonic is expected to be a major antagonist, with rumors circulating about appearances by Amy Rose and Big the Cat. It’s important to emphasize that none of this information has been confirmed by the studio.

The main attraction is Jim Carrey’s comeback as Dr. Robotnik! Even though he said he was quitting acting, Carrey was persuaded to return for the third movie, which is awesome given his amazing performance as the character. Additionally, Alyla Browne joins the cast as Maria Robotnik, the granddaughter of Gerald Robotnik, with her casting announcement shared on social media.
James Marsden, in a 2020 interview with Variety, expressed his commitment to the Sonic films, saying he’s ready to star in “as many as they want to make.” Additionally, Ben Schwartz will return as Sonic, with Idris Elba reprising his role as Knuckles for the film and leading his own spinoff TV series, “Knuckles.” Colleen O’Shaughnessey will also return as Tails, while Tika Sumpter will reprise her role as Maddie. While Shadow’s voice actor remains unconfirmed, fans are eagerly speculating.

The release date for Sonic 3 is now official: December 20, 2024. Although not breaking news since it was set in August 2022, the official Sonic the Hedgehog movie series X handle reiterated the film’s December 2024 release plans in late 2023, confirming the sequel’s launch.
