The debate on censoring OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime has been on since a while now. And now it looks like the topic has again garnered attention as the OTT platforms are facing the censorship threat yet again. According to certain reports government concern has sparked over several court cases and below is all you need to know.
India is considering potential censorship on OTT platforms like Amazon Prime and Netflix a senior government source told Reuters. While the public content is already being moderated by film and TV certification board in India. But, the country does not allow any censorship on digital content.

The complaints and cases that have been filed with the police in these months have sparked concern in the government as most complaints alleged that the content in web series is obscene and or insulted religious sentiments.

It was in January that Netflix’s Indian rival Hotstar had signed a self-regulation code in January over the concerns. Amazon Prime video though denied to sign it and said that the current laws were adequate for them.
“The self-regulation isn’t the same for all, which is raising a concern … the directions are clear, we have to see how to address the problems,” said the government official.
The official also added that it is possible that the government will decide against regulations and several other options are being explored. Which may include self-regulation code without government interference, a government monitored code or measures requiring platforms to obtain content approval in advance.
The government is also concerned about the disparity of how some content doesn’t carry the anti-tobacco warnings. The decision is still pending.
