Back in July 2024, Days of our Lives hired new head writers to take the hit soap in a new direction. Paula Cwikly and Jeanne Marie Ford were officially announced as the writers and even though their scripting began last year, it’s only now that the episode will feature it. Here’s what fans can expect from the coming few weeks on the daytime drama set in the town of Salem.
During a conversation with TV Insider, Paula and Jeanne spoke about their love for the soap and revealed what arcs and returns the fans can expect soon. “We won’t totally abandon the fantastical types of plots Days has become known for, but human relationships will be at the foundation of all of the stories we tell,” they said referring to the essence of family and love.

John Black was played by Drake Hogestyn, who passed away last year from pancreatic cancer. This meant the character was missing from the screen for a while. “We wanted John to have a heroic and meaningful exit,” the writers teased and felt, “There were only so many missions the man could be on.” The duo wrote how to bid the character and actor a goodbye.

“Realizing he might never come back, while praying he would, we needed to craft an exit that honored John, Drake, and the fans,” the two explained. Paula and Jeanne shared their plan to flesh out the younger cast “to give Salem a true multigenerational appeal” to the long-time and new fans.
They continued, “We’ll see the fallout from EJ’s shooting, ripple effects from the shifting dynamics within the Kiriakis and DiMera clans, an emotional tribute to John Black, and the return of Bo and Hope.” The 60th anniversary gala will see “the return of many familiar faces, leading to a new umbrella story that takes us into the New Year,” the head writers further added.

They also mentioned how even though Marlena has counseled many patients through grief, “losing John forces her to re-explore who she is without him.” The whole family drama between Xander and Philip will be the focus of the business storyline as well as the changing family dynamics. Bo Brady and Hope Williams will return once again to the soap opera.
As for the aftermath of EJ’s shooting, “There will be a trial in the summer that involves many characters on the canvas.” On the other hand, Alex and Stephanie will continue to romance and help each other find a new side. Belle is aware that EJ is toxic but she is not able to resist herself. Gwen Rizczech will return and bring some magic, fun and mischief to Salem.
Lastly, Arianna Horton will also make a comeback, bringing out interesting dynamics. Stay tuned to know more details of Days of our Lives, its spoilers and changing storylines each week. The soap opera streams on Peacock.
