Aarya: Did You Know? Not Sushmita Sen But THIS Actress Was The Initial Choice For Ram Madhvani’s Directorial

Ever since the Miss Universe of 1994, Sushmita Sen announced her comeback with Aarya, fans cannot keep calm. So when the trailer of this Do or Die gritty drama was dropped, we couldn’t help but take notice of the fierce character that Sen is all set to essay.

But did you know that Sushmita Sen was not the first choice for the Ram Madhvani directorial? It was in fact yet another boss lady, Kajol who was approached for the part of Aarya. What’s more, is that Kajol had almost signed the project but eventually had to decile it owing to some “personal problems.”

Opening up about what went wrong with Kajol and how Sushmita Sen stepped in, a certain source has been quoted by Pinkvilla. The source has revealed, “When Ram Madhvani was planning this project – a remake of the 2010 gritty drama series Penoza, it was originally being made into a Hindi feature film. Kajol was his first choice and they were in advanced talks with the actress for the film. She had loved the concept and the storyline but had to step out last minute citing personal issues. That had also put Ram’s dream project under a bit of a scanner since it delayed the process a bit.”

The source says that it was on this juncture that the Madhvani thought of Sushmita Sen to play the titular role of Aarya. “Aarya has the female lead playing the central protagonist and he wanted someone who has a commanding screen presence and is also a terrific performer. That’s when he thought of Sush and offered it to her. Among the many offers that she had, Sushmita liked this the most and then, it was decided that it would be made into a digital series with Hotstar coming on board. Sush did take her time but eventually gave a green signal to Ram.”

For those of you unversed, Sushmita was last seen in Anees Bazmee’s No Problem in 2010 alongside Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Paresh Rawal, Akshaye Khanna and Suniel Shetty in pivotal roles. Ram Madhvani, on the other hand, made an exceptionally powerful directorial debut with Sonam Kapoor starrer Neerja.

Aarya features Sushmita in the titular roles and will premier on Disney+ Hostar from the 19th of June.
