Ajatshatru Lavash Patel (Dhanush) a street smart magician from Mumbai has one major aim in life – to take her mother to visit Paris. They’re poor, his mother is a launderer and father is some French guy who is in Paris waiting for them. Ajat grows up amongst the goons and manages to street-lift money, valuable accessories from the tourists. As he loses his mother, he decides to borrow some money and go to Paris to fulfil her dream.

On reaching Paris, he meets Marie (Erin Moriarty) in a furniture store (which also plays a major role in his life). They bond through a beautiful scene in the store inspired by 500 Days Of Summer. But, ‘chance’ transports him to Spain to a renowned movie actress named as Nelly (Bérénice Bejo). From there, his attempts to come back to Marie and more are showed in the second half.

The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir Movie Review: Script Analysis

Romain Puertolas’ story takes very convenient turns according to its need. That pinches the narrative but thankfully is backed by some delightful cinematography. A monologue in the start explains to us how this film will emphasize on ‘chance’, and in the latter half, we see how it plays a very important role in Dhanush’s life.

Vincent Mathias’ camera beautifully covers the dim-lit streets of Paris and narrow lanes of Mumbai. The major backdrop of the film is it binds some delightful moments with very long & lazy yawn-worthy moments. Humour, though cleverly penned is in very small quantity.

The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir Movie Review: Star Performance

It’s a Dhanush show all the way. He is simply effective in every scene and the charm works in his favour. Erin Moriarty levels up to the cuteness on screen. Her portrayal of Marie gives an interesting twist to the character of Dhanush.

Another pretty lady of the film Bérénice Bejo who plays the movie actress has also delivered her performance very well. Special mention for Amrutha Sant, the actress who plays Dhanush’s mom. She is brilliant in her small role.

The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir Movie Review: Direction, Music

Ken Scott’s direction takes jumps and leaps the non-linear narrative style and it’s not confusing. There are no abrupt cuts but editing could have been more tight. Even at just 100 minutes, it seems longer because of the very dragged screenplay.

Nicolas Errèra’s background score stays the best thing about the film. It’s whimsical, especially in the Paris’ portions. Amit Trivedi’s songs don’t add any value to the story but his BGM in the Indian portions is on-point.

The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, this English language film starring Dhanush is delightful in parts. It can be watched just for the lead performances and background score.

Two and a half stars!
