Rating: 2/5 Stars (Two stars)
Star Cast: Neha Dhupia, Ranvir Shorey, Vidushi Mehra
Director: Munish Bhardwaj
What’s Good: Moh Maya Money hits the right nerve with its twisted characters and its apt setting of Delhi.
What’s Bad: Predictability of the second half and a cinematic climax pull this film down.
Loo Break: During the second half would be a good time.
Watch or Not?: Moh Maya Money could have been a better film had the writers come up with a tighter script. It definitely doesn’t fit into a ‘must-watch’ category.
User Rating:
Aman (Ranvir Shorey) is a real estate agent in Delhi who aspires to break away from his ‘middle-class’ lifestyle. In the lieu to achieve a South Delhi style, upper class livelihood, Aman tries to pull off a real estate scam that can earn him big bucks.
He is married to Divya (Neha Dhupia) who is a successful TV news producer. Fed up of Aman’s greed and constant cribbing about their middle-class life, Divya’s disconnect in the relationship is quite evident.
After having pulled off some small time money laundering scenes, Aman takes on a big project that is bound to put him in trouble.
Will Aman pull off a white collar crime without a scratch on his personal or professional life?
Moh Maya Money Review: Script Analysis
Munish Bharadwaj’s Moh Maya Money comes at a right time considering Government’s recent crackdown on black money. The demonetization has been an effective move and especially meant to nab individuals like Aman who commit real estate frauds.
The film’s plot stays true to its title, dealing with the themes of greed and endless aspirations. Aman’s character is a cardboard cut out of most real estate agents/dealers, right from his body language to the lingo.
Divya on the other hand as a media executive seems rational on most occasions and is even braver than Aman who can’t seem to handle his problems on his own. Their dysfunctional relationship as husband-wife is shown aptly and could be a common case in today’s times.
The setting of Delhi works well and especially fits right for Aman’s character.
While on the basic level, the film has a strong plot at hand, it starts to lose out its realism majorly in the second half. The entire sequence of Aman trying to pull off an insurance scam seems lazy. It lacks the detailing required and as Aman’s character quite rightly puts it, ‘This is a white collar crime’, hence it does require more intelligence.
The climax sequence is completely scattered and makes the film’s story more fit for a short film than a feature film.
Moh Maya Money Review: Star Performance
Ranvir Shorey does a good job as the greedy, risk taker Aman. His demeanor of the conniving Delhi based estate dealer is spot on. He particularly shines in scenes such as the one where he gets fired from his job.
Neha Dhupia looks stunning in the film as the media exec. Her acting falls short in most scenes compared to an easy act by Ranvir. She manages to give her best during the crucial climax.
Moh Maya Money Review: Direction, Music
Moh Maya Money is presented as a thriller that sets its pace well in the first half. One knows the twist is about to come but thanks to the non linear pattern of storytelling, you keep guessing when.
The non-linear presentation is put quite cleverly in the first half as you learn about the situation from both sides of Aman and Divya’s characters. Both have their own set of problems and the way they deal it is put interestingly.
Delhi is used well as a symbol in many situations in the film. The scenes such as Aman saying ‘I know how Delhi works and Delhi knows how I work’ are good.
Post interval, as the film’s plot starts diluting, poorly shot sequences take up the screen. A bad cover-up of a murder and some highly melodramatic moments at the end, make you really question the film’s ultimate motives.
Luckily, there are no songs in the film. A healthy background score keeps running all through.
Moh Maya Money Review: The Last Word
Moh Maya Money could have been better if it was a short film. A 2/5 for this!
