What’s Bad: After a superb outdoor action-filled first half, the makers drag the story to indoors in the second half making it slow and predictable.
Loo Break: Only if you get too scared in some scenes, you can opt for one to calm down your mind.
Watch or Not?: This is the fifth time, makers want you to come and take a ride with these dinosaurs, if you’ve been on it for the first four times there’s no question why you’ll skip it now.

Fallen Kingdom carry forward the proceedings from its predecessor, 3 years later since the Jurassic World was destroyed by the dinosaurs. The movie starts with a news report of how Isla Nublar is prone to a volcano eruption soon. The surviving dinosaurs are in danger from the this natural calamity and the humans decide to leave them be. Titling this as an Act Of God, the government decides to not bother about the Dinos letting the die in the volcano.
Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) are hired by Sir Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell), who was once the former partner of the Jurassic Park’s founder Hammond (Richard Attenborough). Lockwood is now planning to shift the surviving dinos to a new sanctuary named as Shangri-La island where they will not be disturbed by the human life. But the plan gets jinxed and everything gets messed up big time. Owen reunites with Blue, Claire bonds over this special connect with these creatures and a lot of things happen to end this fifth instalment on a roar.
“These creatures don’t need our protection, they need our absence,” says Benjamin Lockwood in a scene that defines the entire plot in a single line. Colin Trevorrow, who helmed the 2015 instalment of Jurassic World has co-written the script of Fallen Kingdom with Derek Conolly (Kong: Skull Island). It seems they divided both the halves among themselves; first half has all the Kong: Skull Island elements whereas the second half is stable and indoor.
The proceedings lag in the second half as Bayona somewhere down the line loses the purpose of the story. From a plan of evacuating dinosaurs to a safer place to auctioning them to multi-millionaires, the movie gets lost post the interval point. Though the climax and a superbly-written monologue end the movie on a high note. The sets are beautifully crafted and there are enough heart-in-your-mouth moments throughout. The volcano addition was a masterstroke but just for few scenes. I so wish the movie had more of outdoor action having more of volcanic sequences involved.

Chris Pratt as Owen is back to spit-out some funny one liners with a straight face. He shows the required heroism but he just can’t get out from his Star Lord avatar. He is good but can be better given the scope his character could have. Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire does not have much to do in the script. She is there to give Owen mixed feelings and feel bad for the dinosaurs.
Daniella Pineda as Zia and Justice Smith as Franklin get victimised of lazy writing. They could have been much better but fail because they are treated just as the sidekicks. Toby Jones, the freak from Sherlock, also gets wasted. Where his character could’ve been more wicked, he is left being a noiseless baddie.
J A Bayona, who has proved his mettle with the fantasy-drama – A Monster Calls, gets the theme of Jurassic World on point. A proper amount of darkness and chilling moments make this an entertaining fare in the end. He fails at maintaining a balance between action and emotions. For me, Kong: Skull Island touched that feat and this could have been on similar lines but it scores few misses.
Michael Giacchino’s music is a winner! There are elements of Star Trek and Rouge One in the background score, but it binds in very well with the situations in the film. The BGM is heart-thumping and elevates the scenes to another level.
All said and done, this is the second best in the Jurassic franchise since Spielberg’s 1993’s original. J A Bayona hits many and misses some but delivers a well-crafted, heart-in-your-mouth dino-drama.
Three and a half stars!
