Verdict: Ice Age 4 is entertaining enough for family and kids, not very spectacular
Watch or Not?: Watch it for some funny moments and amazing visuals
The earlier IceAge movies amassed around $ 175- $200 million in the Box Office. Looks like another Box Office Sweeper. Steve Martino and Mike Thurmeier brings back the age of ice that is drifting apart each day. It is surely a family entertainer. The charming characters like Manny the Mammoth (Ray Romano), saber-toothed Diego (Denis Leary), and sloth Sid (John Leguizamo), well the Ice Age 4 fans will know what I am talking about, were successful recreating the magic. The acorn obsessed Scrat (Chris Wedge) as usual begins all the chaos leading to a massive continental drift. Manny, Diego, Sid and Sid’s old granny (Wanda Sykes), get separated from the herd and float away on a slab of ice. They get stuck in the middle of the ocean unable to find a way back home.
The story revolves around their struggle to get back home. Midway they come across hilarious villain Captain Gutt (Peter Dinklage) who is a fearsome Ape and his crew of warriors! They try to attack Manny and the gang in order to feed on their flesh and relish it. Dinklage’s crew include a deranged rabbit (Aziz Ansari) , a dopey seal (Nick Frost), and as another saber-toothed cat (Jennifer Lopez) who gets into a rivalry, and then a romance, with Leary’s Diego. There was another cute element for the kids in the film. The troupe of chipmunks who helped Manny’s team to steal Captain Gutt’s iced ship in a very smart and funny manner.
Will Manny ever reunite with his wife Ellie (Queen Latifah) and daughter Peaches (Keke Palmer)? Will the saber-toothed cat Shiro fall in love with Diego? And will Scrat ever find luck with acorn? Ice Age 4 will tickle your funny bones and leave a smile on your face.
The protagonists are Manny the Mammoth, Diego the saber-toothed cat and Sid the Sloth. There is one new inclusion of Sid’s old and senile granny this time. Also the parallel tale of the acorn obsessed Scrat (Squirrel Rat) runs along the Ice Age story. In each of the Ice Age films the Scrat unknowingly begins havoc and ends up with another. The continuity of the characters and their natures is well intact in this film. There are numerous laughable moments that will keep you pepped up. The script is filled with refreshing punches, cute and ugly characters and many awe moments.
The Voices of Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, Chris Wedge, Jennifer Lopez, Peter Dinklage, Queen Latifa and Keke Palmer are very believable when spoken by the characters. The voice modulations and blend of feelings is just perfect.
The blending song by The Wanted called ‘Chasing the Sun’ is also a very catchy one that lingers on to your mind when you leave the theatre. The 3D visual effects are top class, and the background music just syncs in perfectly. Direction wise Steve Martino and Mike Thurmeier has displayed their vision in a fabulous way. However the earlier films were a tad better than this one.
Overall, it is an entertaining movie but lacks the wow factor of the previous films. It is not better than the earlier Ice Age movies but commendable enough to fill the theatres with family audiences and Ice Age lovers.
Ice Age 4 – Continental Drift releases in India on 27th July 2012.
