It starts with introducing Hattie Shaw (Vanessa Kirby) who injects a harmful virus in herself just to save the world from it. Brixton (Idris Elba), our Black Superman, is with the bad guys and wants that virus from Hattie. The next probable thing is for Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Shaw (Jason Statham) to come together and save the world. Did they do so? Umm, yes! But there is a lot of destruction in between.
So, now Hattie meets with Hobbs and after she defeats the barbarous Rock in a brilliantly choreographed battle. The trio runs from Brixton in order to find a way to eject the virus from Hattie, and dispose it to the safe hands of a CIA handler named Lock (I’m SO PSYCHED UP to tell you guys which actor is this, but NO SPOILERS). Hobbs reunite with his family to team up with them and battle Brixton’s army of machines.
Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw Movie Review: Script Analysis
The game’s old player Chris Morgan (Screenwriter since The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift) handles the (David) Leitch… ahem… leash of this spinoff. Chris Morgan has been serving hot & fresh action in just a bigger platter with every passing year. Even with Hobbs & Shaw, he makes sure to keep the daily-soap-opera element of ‘family’ alive, but in return, we get a whole lot of action (I mean, have you seen the size of The Rock). From London to Los Angeles to Moscow to Samoa, it chooses the best possible places to destroy things.
The emotional angle somewhere falls flat, because it has very less meat to make a strong subplot. The whole ‘mankind is in danger’ stuff is now done to death, but the film finds its solace in the lead pair’s bicker and banter. From hanging people through the windows to crashing cars in them, the less we talk about the action the better. Because it’s something to witness for and imagine how many crazy minds could get together to imagine that level of craziness.
Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw Movie Review: Star Performance
Luke Hobbs is one character to which no one ever could do justice apart from Dwayne Johnson. Dwayne & Hobbs are one such inseparable pair; I mean, this guy makes his muscles act. His character gets an emotional arc with his daughter and family, to which he satisfactorily fulfils his part.
Jason Statham’s Shaw is all about style and power. In the initial intro sequence, we see how his lifestyle his different from Hobbs. Donning sharp suits, fighting in them without getting a crease – Statham rocks as Shaw. Idris Elba is the exact bad guy these both the monsters needed. A perfect choice for Brixton, he puts up a stunning fight.
It’s been said F&F franchise is all set to get a spinoff with a female lead, and there could be no one better than Vanessa Kirby. In a staggeringly choreographed action sequence, she gives Dwayne run for his money. I’ll not be surprised if the next part is called as Hobbs, Shaw & Hattie.
Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw Movie Review: Direction, Music
Director Leitch confirmed his inspiration for Hobbs & Shaw came from the 80s’ cop-buddy films like Lethal Weapon and 48 Hrs. The purpose of bad guys is not on the ‘Utopia’ level, in which you feel even they may be right with their protest. Makers could’ve taken that route but instead, they take a shortcut with a virus that kills the weakest from the earth. Leitch, who has been a former stuntman himself, just goes all out with action and makes sure it gets best of the world.
Tyler Bates, the man who has been with David Leitch in almost all of the movies, gets the taste of his director. He pumps up some sequences with the songs but I just missed a theme song. Movies made on such canvas, always need that one theme which should just pump up the adrenaline. Interestingly, the movie starts with a soothing song only to introduce an action sequence which was a good choice to flag-off.
Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw Movie Review: The Last Word
All said and done, there is one post-credit scene in the film, don’t miss that. Breathtakingly spectacular action sequences backed up by an intriguing storyline makes this a mandatory big-screen (preferably IMAX) watch.
Four stars!
