The Joaquin Phoenix starrer film left the audience in awe of the characters and Phoenix added a bunch of new fans with the portrayal of the dark character Arthur Fleck. The film which described how Joker was created gave birth to many theories, mostly given out by the director Todd Phillips himself. The newest addition to this is whether Zazie Beetz’ character Sophie was killed by Joker or not!
For people who missed out on seeing the film, Arthur Fleck aka Joker begins to bond with his neighbour Sophie at the beginning of the film. They eventually start to have feelings for each other and Sophie becomes very supportive of him. Zazie Beetz’ character even stays by side while his mother is in hospital. But things take a wild turn when Arthur realises that his relationship with Sophie was just his delusion.
Arthur breaks into Sophie’s apartment only to realise that she doesn’t know him. Zazie Beetz’ character then pleads him to leave the apartment as her daughter was sleeping in the next room. The scene cuts to Joker leaving the apartment with dramatic music playing in the background. This left the audience thinking that he killed her, given that his character was crazy and the fact that Sophie was never seen again in the story.
Well, let us tell you that Joaquin Phoenix’s character did not kill Zazie Beetz’ character at all. A deleted scene from Joker’s script revealed that Sophie survived after Arthur’s character leaves her house. According to a report in Deadline, the script of the film had a scene where a horrified Sophie is watching Live With Murray Franklin on her television as Arthur goes violent on Robert De Niro’s show.
This was confirmed by the director himself as well. In an interview, Todd Phillip revealed that Sophie reappeared in the screenplay during a scene that was cut.
The scene went like:
INT. SOPHIE’S APARTMENT, LIVING ROOM – CONTINUOUS
Sophie screams and jumps to her feet horrified! Waking up GiGi who starts to cry when she sees what’s on television–
ANGLE ON TELEVISION, Joker gets up and walks right up to the camera. Blood sprayed over his white painted face. Hear the studio audience still screaming, bedlam all around him.
JOKER (ON TV)
(looks straight into camera; screams Murray’s signature sign off)

Earlier, Todd had revealed, “One of the things I’ve noticed has really caught on is the idea of what Arthur writes in his notebook: ‘The worst part of a mental illness is that people expect you to behave as if you don’t.’ That really resonated with a lot of people who do suffer from mental illness and saw a little bit of themselves in the movie, or in Arthur, or in his experiences in different ways. I’ve had so many people write me emails or posts on my Instagram saying, ‘That line is exactly what it feels like…’
For the unversed, the blockbuster 2019 film featured Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck. He is a wannabe stand-up comedian who suffers from mental health problems. He loses his sanity day by day as he faces several harsh realities and adapts his alter-ego Joker.
The film became the first R-rated movie in history to hit $1 billion globally.
