Speaking about love and romance in bollywood, the only name that pops into our heads is of the legendary Yash Chopra. The filmmaker, who passed away at the age of 80 last year, was a genuine romantic. In his career spanning over five decades with more than 50 films under his belt, Yashji was the one who kept romance breathing in the industry.
He was responsible for shaping up the career of a string of bollywood celebs including the King Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, superstar, Amitabh Bachchan, and many others. In an awards ceremony last, Priyanka Chopra called herself ill-fated to have not worked with Yashji. However for the actors who had an opportunity to work under the late legend, it was a dream come true.
The man taught us the true meaning of love and what better occasion than Valentine’s Day to pay tribute to the prodigy. Here’s a look at some actors, who got the chance of working under producer–director Yash Chopra, in some of his successful ventures..
Amitabh Bachchan
Superstar Amitabh Bachchan and Yash Chopra had a 44 years long connection. Yashji was the one who showed the angry-young-man side and the romantic side of the actor with his movies like Deewar, Kaala Patthar, Trishul, Kabhi Kabhie, Silsila. Due to a certain drift in things, the two were not seen working together until Veer-Zaara happened. Amitabh played a supporting role in the movie that starred Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta.
Yash Chopra also signed Amitabh Bachchan for Mohabbatein, which marked the actor’s second break in the industry. Big B also posted a few lines about the late legend on his blog, “Yash ji, your contribution to the millions that had the privilege to witness your creativity shall be immortal … may we all savour it till our end …”
Shah Rukh Khan
Yash Chopra was like a father-figure for Shah Rukh Khan. He shared a strong bond with the filmmaker and together they worked in blockbuster films like Darr, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Veer-Zaara and Jab Tak Hai Jaan. SRK was named as bollywood’s ultimate lover boy after he acted in Aditya Chopra’s classic romance, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
Shah Rukh talked about his relation with the filmmaker saying, “Yash ji and I used to talk about life. I had a relationship with him which was beyond films and more than films. We never sat down and discussed much about the film.”
The actor had also organized an extensive interview with the director on his 80th birthday.
Kajol
The way in which Yash Chopra represented his heroines on-screen was remarkable. He made his actresses look exceptionally beautiful and one amongst those lucky ones was Kajol. The actress was fortunate enough to work with Yashji in an epic love story, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. It was the movie that took out the true romantic in Kajol.
Speaking about Yashji’s sudden demise, Kajol had said, “I am truly shocked. I don’t know how to react or what to say. He was a true veteran and an era is over with his passing. He will be missed.”
Katrina Kaif
Yash Chopra respected women, and his belief made his leading ladies look even more gorgeous on-screens. Out of the many new generation bollywood divas, Katrina Kaif was the fortunate one to have worked with the legendary Yash Chopra in movies like Ek Tha Tiger, Jab Tak Hai Jaan and upcoming Yash Raj Films’ Dhoom:3.
Working with the prodigy himself was a dream come true for the actress. She ones said, “Yashji is an institution in himself. Also, one thing that I have realised while working with him is that he is very intuitive. There is no right or wrong way to deliver a line when he is calling the shots. He just creates things and you mould yourselves accordingly. Moreover when it comes to romance, it’s an altogether different thing with him. I have worked across various genres but this one is special.”
Rekha
Yashji had said in an interview with Shah Rukh Khan, “God has made women beautiful. I respect all women. I don’t see any badness in them. I am doing my duty by making God’s beautiful creation even more beautiful.” The saying was true for veteran actress Rekha, who was portrayed extremely beautifully in Yash Chopra movies.
Rekha worked with Yashji in one of the most scandalous films of the 80’ Silsila, which also starred Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan in the lead roles. The film was said to be an imitation to the suspected life of the three protagonists. However, Yash Chopra portrayed Rekha as a beautiful other woman in the film and the movie managed to buff up her career.
