An album with an interesting name along with a strong starcast itself speaks a million words on its own and the same is true for the forthcoming project – Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. Music of the album is quite unique with Vishal Bhardwaj’s work who has already demonstrated his mastery in similar settings (Omkara and Ishqiya). Lyrics of the album have been given by Gulzar saab who, along with Vishal, tries to repeat their many successes from the past, starting with Maachis.
Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Title Song – Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Music Review
An interesting collage of instruments accompanied by Sukhwinder Singh’s extremely remarkable and strong vocals turns out to be a perfect blend that is a treat for listeners – all of this makes the title track Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola special. Sukhwinder is well accompanied by Ranjit Barot, as they both put together one of the catchiest numbers of the year. Vishal Bharadwaj energetic composition is quite pleasant and unique in its own way, as the arrangements used by him very aptly keep an air of liveliness around. Lyrics penned by Gulzar make it even more interesting and captivating as the master of pen and poetry uses words that portray best of ‘masti’ with use of quite unusual words. This pleasant outing would certainly steal the hearts of millions.
Khamakha – Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Music Review
Next track Khamakha begins with an amazing chorus as Vishal himself comes behind the mike and takes charge to bring this track to life. Lyrics from Gulzar saab show his depth as the poetry moves like a free flowing breeze in an up and down motion while being well accompanied by the chorus that brings in another dimension. With the concluding part of the track, Prem Dehati’s unusual poetic narration leaves quite a mark while seeking attention, hence adding a third dimension to the track. Overall, this track is a gift for Gulzar saab’s fans.
Oye Boy Charlie – Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Music Review
The album moves ahead with Oye Boy Charlie in the vocals of Rekha Bhardwaj, Shankar Mahadevan and Mohit Chauhan. The way this track starts, it gives an impression of a ‘Qawali’ number in the making. However this soon changes as the song shapes up to being semi-retro ‘qawalli’ and then further reminds one of the musical era of 70s. The play of harmonium and ‘tabla’ blended with the other musical arrangements reveals the versatility of the composer. Rekha’s voice further enhances the aura of the track as it turns out to be a must hear.
Lootnewale – Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Music Review
Sukhwinder Singh often experiments and creates a buzz which he has again been tried with Lootnewale where he is well accompanied by Master Saleem. This one is a situational number that has a motivational feel to it with energy flowing with it. Gulzar saab’s lyrics are quite unusual but attention seeking and perfectly bring on the mutiny and anger, hence further reaffirming intellect and experience. The track has a ‘reprise version’ of a relatively shorter duration but does not seek much attention.
Shara-Rara-Ra – Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Music Review
Have you heard a Haryanvi ‘raagni’ (Haryanvi folk music) on high and fast beats? Well, most would answer a big ‘No’. Well, it is offered here with Shara-Rara-Ra, a solo folk number by the vocalist Prem Dehati. An experiment from Vishal that is quite enjoyable and different from the league, ut has lyrics going quite well with the traditional folk theme.
Badal Uthiya – Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Music Review
Next to arrive is a female solo number Badal Uthiya in the vocals of Rekha Bhardwaj. This one is a melodious Haryanvi ‘raagni’ that has been shaped up as a classical outing which appeals a lot. Vishal in this rendition has blended ‘sitar’ well with other arrangements as there is quite some ‘desi’ flavour added to it. The track has another ‘version’ in the vocals of Prem Dehati which is quite close to the rendition delivered by Rekha and is a ‘raagni’ in its true shape.
Chaar Dina Ki – Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Music Review
Pankaj Kapur and Imran Khan come together in a very short Haryanvi track Chaar Dina Ki which again has Prem Dehati chipping in. The track is followed up by an even shorter number ‘Chor Police’, which is a satire on hot social subject corruption (Chori). The final track ‘Nomvule’ is an African tribal number by Africa Umoja which reminds one of a carnival and in the process turns out to be fairly enjoyable.
The Last Word – Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Music Review
Overall, the album starts well with first three tracks being quite impressive. However, soon after it shapes up as a regional soundtrack rather than a pure Bollywood work with inclusion of three Haryanvi ‘raagni’. The fusion still seems to be interesting from situational perspective but it is ‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’, ‘Khamakha’ and ‘Oye Boy Charlie’ which could take a shot at getting into the charts.
