It’s time to rejoice for all Indians as the film, The Disciple, is making us proud by rising Indian cinema’s esteem internationally. The Marathi film directed by Chaitanya Tamhane has made history at the Venice Film Festival.
Starring Aditya Modak, Arun Dravid, Sumitra Bhave and Kiran Yadnyopavit, the film is selected for main international competition. Written by Chaitanya Tamhane, the film is bankrolled by Vivek Gomber.
The Disciple has been selected for the 77th Venice International Film Festival, thus becoming the first Indian film to be selected in 20 years. The last film to be selected from India was Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding (2001).

Reportedly, Chaitanya Tamhane, Aditya Modak and Vivek Gomber walked the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival for the premiere of their film on Friday.

Meanwhile, recently Chaitanya Tamhane praised Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron. He said that Alfonso is like a friend and a fatherly figure, who has influenced his work in a big way.
Tamhane won wide acclaim at home as well as in the international festival circuit with his debut directorial effort, the Marathi film “Court” (2014). Cuaron took to mentoring filmmaker Tamhane shortly after that and has now executive-produced the new-age Indian director’s new film, The Disciple.
“I’m very respectful of the relationship I have with Alfonso. He has been very supportive right from the beginning. He knew about ‘The Disciple’ from its genesis, from the time it was just an idea in my head. When he read the script, he helped me find certain crew members, saw the rough cut and gave his notes and saw the finished film,” Tamhane told IANS.
