Shawn Mendes, while introducing Sam Smith at the 2020 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball show on Thursday, used wrong pronouns for the latter. The “Señorita” singer referred Sam as “he” while their preferred pronoun is “They.” After realising his mistake, Shawn took to Instagram on Friday and apologised to Sam.
The 22 years old singer took to Instagram stories and wrote, Oh @samsmith I’m so sorry for referring [sic] to you as a ‘he’ for your jingle ball introduction. It absolutely slipped my mind. Won’t happen again. Sending you so much love! Also you absolutely are one of the funniest people I’ve ever met.”
Sam Smith accepted Shawn Mendes’ apology and replied via his Instagram story. The 28 years old singer wrote, “We’re all learning together” along with two hearts. He added, “Happy holidays, all my love xx.”

For the unversed, Sam Smith, in an interview with actor and activist Jameela Jamil, had said “I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between.” Then, in September of 2019, they came out as non-binary on Instagram, telling their fans and followers that their pronouns are “they/them.”
Sam Smith had written, “Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM ❤ after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.”

Well, we think it was sweet of Shawn Mendes immediately correcting his mistake and apologising for that. Equally beautiful is Sam Smith’s supportive attitude towards his peer.
