Ryan Reynolds took to social media back in July 2023 to toast Sandra Bullock on her birthday—not with cake and candles, but with a well-timed wink to their famously awkward nude scene in The Proposal.

In the playful birthday post, Reynolds wrote, “Happy Birthday to the inimitable and stunning Sandra Bullock! For your birthday this year, I got us both intimacy coordinators. And an HR department. And clothing?” The post came with a clip from The Proposal, showing Bullock’s character accidentally toppling onto Reynolds while both were completely nude and hilariously unaware.

From Banter to Backlash

However, fast forward to now, and that lighthearted jab is being reinterpreted under a very different spotlight, one tinted with courtroom drama and legal fire.

Nearly two years after the post, fans have dusted it off, connecting dots no one saw coming. As it turns out, Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, is embroiled in a legal tangle with It Ends with Us co-star and director Justin Baldoni. The tension escalated during the film’s production, eventually erupting into Lively suing Baldoni for sexual harassment and what she claimed was a calculated campaign of social manipulation.

In retaliation, Baldoni hit back with his own lawsuit, naming not just Lively, but also Reynolds and their publicist, accusing them of defamation.

And now, suddenly, Reynolds’ birthday message, which joked about gifting Bullock, “intimacy coordinators” and “clothing,” doesn’t just read like Reynolds humor, but it feels like a thinly veiled dig, a side-swipe that’s now echoing uncomfortably close to home.

Fans were quick to recall that in mid-production on It Ends with Us, Lively issued a list of 30 demands to Baldoni, including the constant presence of an intimacy coordinator on set.

It read, “No more improvising of kissing. All intimate touches must be choreographed in advance by Blake Lively, an intimacy coordinator. No biting or sucking of the lip without Blake Lively’s consent. All intimate on-camera touch and conversation must be ‘in character,’ not spoken by Justin Baldoni or Blake Lively personally. An intimacy coordinator must be present at all times when Blake Lively is on set in scenes with Justin Baldoni.”

When Nudity Was Just for Laughs

The original scene between Bullock and Reynolds wasn’t exactly a steamy moment; it was more slapstick than sultry. Their characters could barely stand each other at that point in the film, making their skin-on-skin mishap feel more like a physical comedy gag than romantic tension. But behind the scenes, it was still a logistical nightmare.

Recalling how the scene played out, Oscar-winner Bullock said, “You have things covering up your essential parts, but they get unstuck. And, oddly enough, we didn’t care because we were so tired. Ann (director Ann Fletcher) was like, ‘Sandra, your vagina is hanging out. Cover it up.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, sorry, sorry.’ And the crew would be like, ‘Jeez, her nipple is showing.’”

She added, “They weren’t titillated; they were unhappy because they knew we had to retake the shot. They’re like, ‘We want to go to lunch. Cover the nip.’ So that’s pretty much how the day went.”

Still, Bullock gave props to the director for making the nudity work—not for titillation, but for humor.

According to LadBible, she said, “Ann Fletcher, the director, was amazing in how she choreographed it because we knew we couldn’t show anything too explicit. I had a little bit more area to cover than Ryan did, so it was a little trickier for me. But I can talk about Ryan’s penis if you want. I mean, if I looked like him, I’d be naked all the time.”
