This year marked the 20th anniversary of Russell Crowe starrer Gladiator. Released back in 2000, this epic historical drama is still one of the most loved films of all time. It went on to win three Academy Awards and was critically as well as commercially acclaimed.

To everyone’s surprise, though Gladiator has emerged to be this cult movie today it came with its fair share of problems. It has been slammed by Russell Crowe 20 years down the line.

Russell recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show and had a heart-to-heart conversation with the host about Gladiator and a lot of other things. He said, “Gladiator was a unique experience because the script that they had was so bad, it was just so bad.”

He also revealed, “The producer didn’t know I’d actually already been able to get a copy, but the thing he said is ‘I don’t want to send you the document we have because you won’t respond to it’. He was so prepared and the things he was showing me and the visual images and the mathematics of how he was going to not have to build an entire Colosseum yet still shoot the Colosseum.”

Crowe also talked about his first meet with director Ridley Scott who was the reason why he came on-board Gladiator: “And we just clicked on that first meeting. By the time I was leaving the set, I definitely felt the collective energy of that cast was fantastic.”

That wasn’t it, he also said something to say about Joaquin Phoenix’s path-breaking performance in Joker. He said, “You’ve got Joaquin Phoenix just smashing open anybody’s assumptions of what a character like that could be. Everybody bought into it.”
