Twitter critics slammed the US TV persona and media mogul, Oprah Winfrey calling her hypocritical “fraud” and a phoney following the latest instalment of her Apple TV+ series, “The Oprah Conversation”. The reaction came after the socialite slammed white privilege on the talk show, where former NFL star and race activist Emmanuel Acho came as a guest speaker.

In a two-part episode of The Oprah Conversation, a segment was conducted inviting non-black viewers to ask difficult questions about racism and white privilege. During the segment, a guest inferred, “Not all white people have power. There’s plenty of poor, working-class white people. But I think that when we group all of the white people together and we don’t recognize the fact that there’s a lot of white people that struggle, and it’s a different struggle as you mentioned because they’re not streaming upstream let’s call it …”

The guest continued on the show saying that all people coming together to eradicate racism and the inequities that are prevalent in this country, should not specifically target all white people.

To which Winfrey responded, “There are white people who are not as powerful as the system of white people — the caste system that’s been put in place. But they still, no matter where they are on the rung or ladder of success, they still have their whiteness.”

The 66-year-old media mogul also said white people have a “leg up”. She even defined the White privilege by saying that mere whiteness still gives you an advantage, no matter what. To counter the argument, netizens en masse on the comment section were quick to point out that Winfrey’s current net worth stands at $2.6 billion, as per Forbes, a “racist phoney” and “fraud” for making huge money on her primarily white audiences.

However, in spite of her billions, it was announced in July that the monthly print edition of “O” Magazine would be shut down after a 20-year run on newsstands. The decision was taken after the result of poor sales due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
