The US is witnessing an ongoing protest that followed with the gruesome killing of African American George Floyd. Many celebrities have joined the civilians on the streets to seek justice for George. Hugh Jackman who isn’t present in The US, however, lend his support through a tweet. But turns out, his tweet did not go down well with many who called him out for only showing the good side, and ignoring police brutality. His post was labelled ‘propaganda’.
The tweet in question here was put up by Wolverine fame Hugh Jackman on his official Twitter handle. In the picture, a protestor can be seen hugging a police officer. He captioned it as, “ Solidarity”. It was this tweet that called in for backlash.

For the unversed, the protests in several areas have witnessed police brutality, and it is this that Hugh Jackman is been accused of giving a side-eye to. The Black Lives Matter movement has for sure caught the momentum and according to netizens, such content weakens it.
Hugh Jackman’s tweet has been called out since then. While, a user wrote, “Dude recently said he still hangs out with Ivanka and Jared and because he’s just not that “political” that makes it okay.” Another wrote, “The last time a photo like this went viral, it was staged and the Black kid and his entire family ended up dead. If you want to share solidarity, share this.”
A user calling out Hugh Jackman for not showing the brutal side, wrote, “I’m sorry but you can’t post that if you aren’t also sharing the videos of police brutality! The news is doing enough of sharing this bullshit instead of what’s actually going on. Peaceful protesters being attacked for no damn reason by the cops who are supposed to keep them safe.”

Hang in there for the "half an hour after this picture was taken, that cop teargassed the protester"

The point is images like the one above are constantly used as a cover for and distraction from violence against Black people. Its primary purpose is to encourage folks like yourself to continue silencing Black people from speaking on systems of oppression. It doesn’t help us.

If you wanna show solidarity, here is a link you can donate through. Much more genuine than a staged photo that was followed by violence by the police on the people they used as props.https://t.co/88pLnWKtkY
