Chris Evans On People’s Expectations: “I Got In Those Weeds 10 Years Ago When I Signed Up For Captain America”

Chris Evans, Michelle Dockery, and Jaeden Martell starring Defending Jacob came to an end yesterday. This Apple TV+ miniseries managed to impressed people with its sharp writing, suspense, and thriller factor. The last episode has left a lot of their fans astonished.

In the last episode, Chris Evans’ character Andy Barber has to make a crucial choice and he does so. Without thinking of what’s right or wrong, he does everything that protects his family. This slightly contradicts his Captain America character who would only fight for what’s right. In an interview with Variety, the Knives Out actor was asked about portraying such a complex person and people’s expectations from him.

When asked about people’s expectations, the Avengers: Endgame actor said, “The concept of expectations is a little bit of a fallacy and a little bit of a slippery slope, and I got in those weeds 10 years ago when I signed up for ‘Captain America.’ And part of the last 10 years has been about awakening to the fact that it is a fallacy and that the whole notion of things like momentum and perception, and you can create those burdens if you want them, but it’s really got nothing to do with the work.”

About his character Andy Barber in Defending Jacob, Chris Evans shared, “I looked at it less from the perspective of whether or not the judicial system did their job and more about whether or not we as humans are able to compartmentalize what we need to do in order to circumvent the conventional notion of law — how far would you go to preserve your family, your son, your wife, your loved ones? I think in that arena law matters very little. The prison you’re trying to avoid is the prison within.”

In Defending Jacob, Andy Barber is a district attorney. But when it comes to his family, he would do anything. Talking about Captain America, after Avengers: Endgame, Chris Evans won’t be a part of Marvel Cinematic Universe anymore. His contract ended with the film.
