On April 16, Oscar-winning director Gene Deitch aka Eugene Merrill Deitch passed away in his apartment in Prague. Gene made everyone’s childhood blissful with cartoons like Tom and Jerry & Popeye, and his death is a huge loss in the world of art and entertainment..

1. The original names for Tom and Jerry were Jasper and Jinx.
2. When the first episode of Tom and Jerry was aired, MGM studio was almost going to cancel it. The studio thought that a cat and mouse concept is common in the cartoon world.
3. We have seen Tom walking like humans on his two legs. However, in the first few episodes, Tom used to use his four legs to walk like any normal cat.
4. Both Tom and Jerry were always behind each other’s lives. But sometimes, they would go on to become friends. But a shocking fact is that the cat and mouse duo committed suicide in one of the episodes.
5. Tom and Jerry was nominated 13 times for Oscars, out of which, the cartoon show won 7 times.
1. The characters Popeye and Olive Oyl are based on real people. These people used to live near cartoon’s maker E. C. Segar’s house. That’s how he got inspired to make this cartoon.
2. Popeye is the first cartoon character to gets his statue. In 1937, a statue was made in Crystal City of Texas.

3. Jack Mercer and Margie Hynes who lent their voices to Popeye and Olive ended up getting married to each other.
4. Spinach isn’t the first source of Popeye’s power. In the earlier comic strip stories, the sailor man used to get his special powers by rubbing the hair of a Whiffle hen named Bernice.
5. Olive Oyl is one of the adorable characters in the cartoon. However, in Spain, the name is seen as an insult to the olive tree. Hence, her character is renamed, Rosario.
