When Selena Gomez Mocked Black Lives Matter Movement: “Oh Lol, If I Hashtag Something I Save Lives?” – PAST TENSE(D)

Selena Gomez has been a pop sensation ever since she was a teenager. She made her acting debut at the age of 7 and there was no looking back. The singer is currently using the platform to spread positivity. Her company, Rare Beauty, is raising $100 million for mental health services. But do you remember her controversial comment on a social subject? It has to do with the Black Lives Matter movement.

It was back in 2016 when her best friend Taylor Swift was in a feud with Kanye West & Kim Kardashian. The whole soup was regarding the rapper’s song ‘Famous.’ A leaked audio along with several allegations took the Internet by storm. It was then when Selena got into the scene and made a rather controversial statement.

When Kim Kardashian shared Taylor Swift’s audio on Snapchat, Selena Gomez took an indirect dig at the reality star. In a now-deleted tweet, the Rare singer wrote, “There are more important things to talk about… Why can’t people use their voice for something that f**king matters.”

It was then when a netizen questioned Selena Gomez about why she wasn’t raising her voice over social causes that matter. He asked her why she hasn’t even spoken about topics like police brutality or Black Lives Matter.

To this, Selena replied, “oh lol so that means if I hashtag something I save lives? No- I could give two f**ks about ‘sides.’ You don’t know what I do.” The tweet may have been deleted by Gomez, but the memory is still fresh amongst many users.

Black Lives Matter movement gained its peak after the death of George Floyd. The Minneapolis man was a victim of police brutality. Many Hollywood celebrities joined protests to gain justice for him.

Selena Gomez amongst others too tweeted in support. “They deserve better. They deserve to be heard. We all need to do better and not sit in silence as this injustice continues. #blacklivesmatter #justiceforgeorgefloyd #icantbreathe,” she wrote on 31st May.

Several users took to the comment section and even backlashed her recalling her old statement.
