Leonardo DiCaprio: From Being Offered To Play Spider-Man To Surviving A Shark Attack, Take A Look At His 5 Surprising Facts!

Don’t we all love Leonardo DiCaprio? The actor has been enjoying immense fame since many years of being an actor and while we already know a lot about him, there still might be some details that we are unaware of. So, to facilitate you with that information about your favourite star, Koimoi lists down five little known facts about Leo that might surprise you. Read on.

Leonardo DiCaprio As Spider-Man?

Much before Tobey Maguire played Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s 2002 superhero flick, revered filmmaker James Cameron had plans to make a film on the popular Marvel character in the 90s. And guess what, he had offered the part to DiCaprio. Opening up on the same, the actor had revealed to Empire Magazine, “I know he was semi-serious about doing it at some point, but I don’t remember any further talks about it. We had a couple of chats. I think there was a screenplay that I read, but I don’t remember. This was 20 years ago!” In fact, later on Leo was also considered for Tobey’s role.

Surviving A Shark Attack

While shooting for Blood Diamond in Cape Town, South Africa, DiCaprio had a near fatal accident with a Great White Shark while being on a scuba excursion. “I had a huge fear of sharks, and when I did Blood Diamond in 2006 I actually got stuck in a cage with a great white, which was awesome,” the Academy Award winning actor had informed on The Ellen Degeneres Show. “It was a gigantic great white… They actually said in 30 years this has never happened, but the tuna kind of got stuck on the top of the cage and the great white leapt out and tried to bite it and went into the cage with me,” he said, further adding, “Half of its body was in and out, and I flattened down at the bottom, and it was this far away, and it chomped a few times but I survived it.” Now’s that’s some experience we must say.

No N*dity Please

Did you know back in March 1998, Leonardo DiCaprio had sued the Playgirl magazine reportedly as an attempt to stop them from publishing his n*de pictures in their July edition. Apparently the publication didn’t even let the actor have a look at the pictures, and this entire incident had even caused Leo a great amount of emotional stress. “Mr. DiCaprio is confident that his rights will be protected by the courts, and will not tolerate Playgirl or any other person or entity’s illegal exploitation of his name and likeness,″ his publicist had stated in a statement.

What’s In The Name?

Leonardo DiCaprio, isn’t this a brilliant name? After so many years of watching him on the big screen, we couldn’t imagine the actor with any other name. However, you will be surprised to know that at the beginning of his career DiCaprio was suggested to rechristen himself. “Yeah, when I was 11-year-old, when I first wanted to be an actor professionally. We went to an agent and they wanted to change my name to Lenny Williams. They felt my name was too ethnic and I wouldn’t get as many jobs. So that thwarted me from being an actor for a number of years. I tried again two years later when I was 13 and got an agent to accept me with my name,” reported Femalefirst. Great decision, Leo.

Not The First Choice To Play Titanic’s Jack Dawson.

Now that’s another big revelation. Not Leonardo DiCaprio, but Matthew McConaughey was initially supposed to play Jack Dawson in Titanic. Confirming the same on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, director James Cameron had revealed that Leo’s casting was much to do with his popularity with the women. “Matthew read for the part and then we met Leo. Leo came in for an interview and I had this weird thing: I looked around the room and every woman in the building was in the meeting… the accountant was there, the female security guard, so I thought maybe I better cast this guy,” he had recalled. While we love McConaughey, DiCaprio is now etched in our memories as Dawson, Jack Dawson.
