Mohit Suri’s Aashiqui 2 is performing a better feat than one would have expected. Retaining the nascent magic of original Aashiqui, the film’s performance hasn’t lagged behind despite a magnanimous competition from Iron Man 3. Though single screens were initially the target group for Aashiqui 2, the film did perform extremely well at the multiplexes too, earning an opening collection of 5.75 crores which is gradually expected to soar through the weekend. In fact Saturday collections were even better what with 15% growth at the Domestic Box Office.
Though one might see 5.75 crore as a measly amount, it must be kept in view that Aashiqui 2 stars are lesser known faces. The films with bigger stars this year hasn’t really been impressive ventures, read Himmatwala or even Ek Thi Daayan from last week and unexpected films like Kai Po Che shone to glory!
While most releases of the last few weeks faded away from the word go, like Ek Thi Daayan with brilliant actors like Konkona Sen Sharma and Emraan Hashmi fizzled away almost immediately after release! Even Bollywood new doe eyed boy Ayushmaan Khurrana’s Nautanki Saala could only have a basic income of 3.25 crore when it opened at the domestic box office!
Chashme Baddoor‘s opening fare was better at 5.18 crores and Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi starrer Zila Ghaziabad with its un-luring face could barely collect 3.5 crores as opposed to Kai Po Che, which caught on well despite lesser known stars and earned 4.50 crore rupees at the domestic box office.
Akshay Kumar’s big release Special Chabbis too began at a subdued pace and could manage an opening of 6.50 crore rupees.
To find reasons in IPL to blame is indeed a sad excuse, a more apt reason what works now depends mostly on the taste of the audiences! It is not always the story which works but an overall appealing package which provides wholesome entertainment is what sells in India.
