If this was his first box office milestone, the actor soon broke his own record with 2009 film 3 Idiots which became the first film to make it to the 200 crore club. The Rajkumar Hirani film made a lifetime business of 202 crores. In spite of being a multi-starrer, Aamir’s college boy look worked its charm.
Other than making a mark at the domestic box office, Aamir’s global fan following has also made sure to give his films huge success overseas. He has three films in the overseas top 10 grossers and is leading with PK which grossed 792 crores worldwide which is highest of all time. This comes as a surprise because Aamir is the only actor who does not do fancy world tours, yet has a humongous International fan following.
Interestingly, Aamir seemed to have taken it on himself to create unimaginable box office records since he also pioneered the 300 crore club with PK at the domestic box office. His alien act in the film was well appreciated and his gutsy act of going nude on the poster was another stunt that made sure that PK would grab the headlines.
One would easily wonder what is it about this persona that makes his films grab a repeat audience even in today’s times. Even with a film like Dhoom 3 that did not manage to receive positive reviews all the way, the film made a business of 280 crores at the domestic box office and over 500 crores worldwide which was the highest in its time.
Over the years, Aamir has managed to create an image of himself that is humanitarian and with the promising roles that he has signed, he became a favorite of the audiences for his distinct films. His experimental nature and also the commitment of doing only one film a year has worked in his favor.
