Join UsBollywood is giving us an interesting February this year. For the month of love, the releases this month are quite contrary to the general feel that should be around Valentine’s Day! While last Friday saw the infamous Vishwaroop battle it out with wickedly done David, this Friday has better surprises in store for us.
This Friday battling it out will be ABCD – Any Body Can Dance and Special Chabbis (26). While the former is India’s first ever earnest attempt to recreate the Step Up magic in Bollywood style, Special Chabbis (26) is an adventure film which recreates one of India’s most intriguing real-con story.
Choreographer Remo D’souza who is quite a household name after judging important dance reality shows like Dance India Dance on television is looking forward to the release of ABCD. A host of best choreographers are acting in ABCD led by Prabhu Deva, who is a National Award winning choreographer. He is familiar with myriad dancing styles and is always following with tremendous dance energy. Contrary to initial belief that Prabhu Deva has a mere cameo in the film; it is official that he plays lead with the seasoned actor Kay Kay Menon. Prabhu’s last stint with acting was in 1996 film Sapne where he starred with Kajol. The film is produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur under UTV Motion Pictures and will be released in 3D as well.
Neeraj Pandey of A Wednesday fame is back after a dry spell of three years with Special Chabbis (26). Known for his documentary style of hardcore journalistic fashion of film making, Neeraj this time has put together a script way different from his last film. Special Chabbis will see Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, Jimmy Shergill and Manoj Bajpai in central roles. The film is deemed to be a heist drama and going by Neeraj’s track record one can be rest assured that the film will have a lot to look forward to. The film is quite important for both Neeraj and Akshay. Neeraj has single mindedly focused on this film since the past three years and as for Akshay, after Khiladi 786 lukewarm reception at box office, it is important for him to reaffirm his stance as a good actor. Akshay despite having his fingers in all sorts of pies has always maintained himself as an actor of immense caliber. Though Kumar specializes in typically masala flicks, it’s time for him to try out the space of realistic films. Apparently Neeraj was so hell bent on casting just Akshay for this role; he waited for Akshay a really long time for the film’s shooting to commence. The film deals with the true incident that occurred in the earlier part of 1980s where a bunch of men, posing as CBI officers cons the important Opera House branch of Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri and plunders jewellery and cash worth a few millions.
Neeraj Pandey is also commendable for his ability to portray on screen dilemmatic situations and convert them into adventure movies. He is already on his way to create a niche in Bollywood which will exhibit that despite mindless films can rake 100 crores easily; quality still maintains it’s inherent worth here. His effort clearly has a gritty value and will be produced by Viacom 18 which is fostering the Bollywood scripts which contain a newer creative bent in ideas. Be it Sudhir Mishra’s honest attempt in Inkaar at delivering a story of workplace sexual harassment or the intriguing suspense story in Kahaani, Viacom 18 is the new face of smart films in Bollywood.
Pandey’s realistic magnificence is pitted against Remo’s style, while Akshay Kumar and Prabhu Deva who had a brilliant time working together on Rowdy Rathore will fight it out with each other on silver screens this Friday. Though it is a tad bit unfair to even compare two such different films from completely different genres of work, Box office competition is an obvious and stark reality in Bollywood.
