Yesterday, on Valentine’s Day, we saw two major releases locking horns with each other at the North American box office. Yes, we’re talking about Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web and Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Bob Marley: One Love. Considering the differences in genres, there’s no clash as such, but still, they will affect others’ businesses to an extent. Let’s see how much both films earned on their day 1!

This year, there haven’t been any tentpole releases so far, but still, things are fair enough. Films like The Beekeeper and Mean Girls raked in good numbers and turned out to be box office successes. Other than that, there are holdovers like Wonka running in theatres. Now, two new Hollywood releases have hit theatres, but none of them are looking to score big.

Madame Web takes a dismal start!

First, let’s talk about Madame Web. It’s the fourth film in Sony’s Spider-Man universe, so there was some sort of buzz around it. However, projections showed not-so-good numbers during the 6-day extended weekend run. Unfortunately, even reviews are highly negative, and the effect of the same was very much visible on day 1 itself.

As per the report in Deadline, Madame Web did an estimated business of $5 to $5.5 million on Valentine’s Day. This is a dismal start, and from here, there’s little hope of any miraculous turnaround.

Bob Marley: One Love clocks $10 million+ on day 1!

Coming to the second release of Valentine’s Day, Bob Marley: One Love has taken comparatively a much better start, with an estimated collection of $12 million coming in on Wednesday. However, some say that this film is frontloaded, and after the initial momentum, it won’t sustain for long.

Speaking about the reviews, they are mixed so far, and even the audience feedback is mixed.

Opening weekend projection

Madame Web and Bob Marley biopic will enjoy a 6-day long weekend from Wednesday to Monday (President’s Day). During this weekend, the Dakota Johnson starrer is expected to earn $22-$25 million. On the other hand, Bob Marley: One Love is aiming to score $30-$35 million.
