Aamir Khan’s Dhobi Ghat has managed a very respectable all India box-office nett collection of Rs. 9.25 crore (Rs. 92.5 million) in its first weekend at the theatres. The film, directed by Aamir’s wife, Kiran Rao, could get enough people to the theatres because of Aamir’s presence in the film’s star cast.  Considering the film’s budget of Rs. 11 crore, the box-office performance of the ‘Dhobi Ghat’ is very good, even excellent, but does not necessarily reflect on the merits of the film but rather on & Aamir Khan’s brand value.

Aamir Khan’s investment in ‘Dhobi Ghat’, made under his production banner, Aamir Khan Productions, will provide good returns as the film was made on a small budget. The total budget of Dhobi Ghat (production + promotion + release) is Rs. 11 crore (Rs. 110 million) approx. Also, Aamir Khan is yet to sell the film’s satellite rights, which will add more crores to his coffers.

Conscientious Aamir Khan
Aamir Khan is so honest and conscientious that he hasn’t sold the satellite rights of his Dhobi Ghat as yet. Aware that the film is meant for the niche audience only, he preferred to wait for the box-office verdict on the film rather than selling away the satellite rights on the strength of his name – not only is he the producer of the film but he is also playing a lead role in it. Had he sold off the satellite rights of ‘Dhobi Ghat’ before its theatrical release, he would’ve got a handsome price because of his brand value. But he did not want the TV channel acquiring the rights to suffer any loss, which would’ve been the case if the film did not fare well at the ticket windows. By waiting for the public verdict to be out before selling the satellite rights, Aamir took a chance. For, he would get a higher price if the film clicked but a much lower price if it didn’t.

The superstar has always maintained that he would like everybody associated with his films to earn from them rather than only himself making money. By not selling the satellite rights even though television channels were willing to play blind, Aamir has proved that he means what he says about everyone earning from his films. Wish there were more actors and producers like this Khan!
