Going by the performance of other films that released in the first half, here are some of stars that surprised us with their box office performance.
The disastrous Hawaizaada formed as an incredible blow to Ayushmann’s career. Hopes were almost given up if he would ever resurface from this. To his fortune, YRF’s Dum Laga Ke Haisha turned out to be a game changer. The film was released after a gap of one month from Hawaizaada yet managed to work magic for the star. The film’s simplistic content worked in favor as it struck a nerve with the audiences.
In spite of starring in the record-breaking film PK, Anushka Sharma couldn’t be credited much for the success of the film. When she ventured into production with her first film NH10, there weren’t big expectations from the film. To our surprise, the film managed to perform extremely well at the box office and was declared a hit.
It may come as a surprise as to why Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan are being counted as surprising box office stars. Well, both actors are successful enough but it is their project Piku that met with unprecedented success at the box office which was quite a shocker. Once again it was proved that audiences chose content over massy entertainment, thus making this star combo a hit at the box office.
Kangana Ranaut earned the ‘actress’ tag post her successful stint with Queen. While Queen was a woman-centric drama with rich content, her consequent films like Revolver Rani crashed. Surprisingly, the sequel to Tanu Weds Manu which released this May met with unlikely success. Tanu Weds Manu Returns went on to become the highest grosser of the year and became the first 100 crore film of the year.
Varun Dhawan not only proved his acting prowess with Badlapur, but also managed to set a good standing at box office. His film, Badlapur became first hit of the year. What is worth noticing is that, the film’s noir genre being a niche taste, it still earned the audience appeal.
