2014 has been an interesting year that clearly demarcated and distributed evenly between the Superstars and the younger lot. The first six months of the year had the younger guns ruling handsomely, making their way up into the distinguished 100 crore club. It will obviously be incorrect to club them together but as contemporaries, collision and comparisons are certainly inevitable.
Koimoi takes a look at the younger lot of actors and analyses their box office power and scope in the industry.
Alia Bhatt

From Shanaya in Student Of The Year to Veera Tripathi of Highway, Baby Bhatt has certainly progressed towards potential and caliber. Though, in a Karan Johar launch vehicle, Alia began her journey on a pompous note, following which she moved towards rendering more unlikely and realistic roles. Yes, Highway got mixed responses at the box office, but it was the success of 2 States that made a superstar out of her. The film that became her first 100 crore earner, made 104 crores at the box office. Even Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, which was made on a modest budget, earned 76 crores plus at the box office, much to the young actress’ credit. The scope of films improved for Alia as she has been cast opposite Ranbir Kapoor for Ayan Mukerji’s next film and Vikas Bhai’s next Shandaar. After a brilliant film like Queen, Bahl is expected to create better films and definitely it’s a byproduct of Alia’s great work that she was roped in opposite Shahid Kapoor for the role.
Varun Dhawan

Varun Dhawan started the year with Papa David Dhawan’s directorial Main Tera Hero reminding us of typical Govinda-Salman antics. The movie became a Plus affair with 55 crores. But what remained etched in the memory of audience with both Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Main Tera Hero, is the actor’s effortlessness on screen. He is so easy and his comic timing is incredibly impeccable. So far Varun has played similarly hued characters but with Sriram Raghavan’s Badlapur in his kitty, the actor is all set to prove his mettle with different roles as well.
Sidharth Malhotra

A non Bollywood kid, Sidharth Malhotra began 2014 on a good note. Definitely with Hasee Toh Phasee, his gooey adorable charm that has the ability to woo women was overshadowed by Parineeti Chopra’s acting prowess. Though the film made a plus earning at the box office with nearly 35 crores at the domestic box office, it was actually Ek Villain that catapulted him further. Almost equaling Jai Ho‘s opening, the film was amongst the year’s best box office openers and scored 105.50 crores at the box office giving him the first 100 crore film. The actor is all set to star with Akshay Kumar in Warrior and has been roped for Vikramaditya Motwane’s next.
Arjun Kapoor

The actor was having a dull year till last year when Aurangzeb under performed at the box office. But then it was Gunday this year that despite failing to make 100 crores did well with an 75 crores business. 2 States furthered the success by becoming a Superhit by joining the 100 crores ranks. The year has, however, just started for the actor who has in line Finding Fanny with Deepika Padukone.
Shraddha Kapoor

Her career had started in a low note and the actress wasn’t expecting any level of super success until Aashiqui 2 happened. It was a year since that and the actress again came out bigger with 100 crores plus business with Ek Villain. Though the film revolved mostly around its male leads, the actress still has a significant film in her kitty – Vishal Bharadwaj’s Haider.
