No one really expected Bhoothnath Returns to take a flying start as it was primarily a word of mouth film from the very onset. In fact, and as predicted in this column, even a 40% all-India opening would have been a fair start for the Amitabh Bachchan starrer since ‘Bhothnath’ in itself wasn’t quite a fabulous hit. However, the film opened on an even lower note with a 25%-30% start, hence resulting in a low first day.
There was a turnaround though over the weekend with good jump on Saturday and Sunday, hence resulting in over 16.50 crore coming in. With this, the film has surpassed the first week total of ‘Bhoothnath’ (14 crore) in its opening weekend itself. With decent reviews and word of mouth, the film has managed to find a good footing for itself.

Now it is a wait and watch scenario to see how the first week unfolds. While the film would surely now cross the 25 crore lifetime total of ‘Bhoothnath’, it will be interesting to see how much further does it go from here since 2 States, which releases next, would ensure a chunk of audience for itself.
