Released at limited screens on a restricted show count, Bastar saw a low opening at the box office. Even though it was known prior to the release that the Adah Sharma starrer would depend entirely on word of mouth, at least 75 lakhs to 1 crore were still expected at the box office since the trailer was quite interesting. However, the numbers that came in were half of that, as 40 lakhs* were collected instead.

Bastar comes from the team of The Kerala Story, which stunned the industry last year with a blockbuster opening for itself, given the kind of genre, subject, scale, and size that it boasted of. From opening Friday of 8.05 crores, it went on to have a lifetime of 242.40 crores, which resulted in an all-time blockbuster tag for itself and also that of being the most profitable film of the year. Hence, when producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah and director Sudipto Sen came together for Bastar, one expected at least a bare minimum start for it.

However, an opening of 40 lakhs* means that the turnaround would need to be massive, and that needs to start today and then have the momentum continue right into Sunday as well. At the very least, the film Bastar needs to hit that 1 crore mark today and then 2 crores on Sunday to find itself in that zone from where it can keep collecting from Monday onwards. One waits to see now if that happens indeed.
