The controversial Amitabh Bachchan starrer Aarakshan (read review), made Rs. 18 to Rs. 18.5 at the box-office on its first weekend (approx all-India net collections). The collections for the Prakash Jha film, which has been in the eye of the storm recently, improved slightly over the weekend.
Aarakshan started off with Rs. 4.75 crore on Friday (August 12). Collections improved over the next two days with the film raking in Rs. 6.25 to Rs. 6.5 crores on Saturday and Rs. 7 to Rs. 7.25 crore on Sunday.
The film, which dealt with the touchy topic of caste-based reservations in India, was banned in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh before its release citing “law-and-order problems”. Fortunately, the ban on the film was lifted in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday and the ban on Punjab removed from Sunday.
