While the concept of using Witches is not a unique one, Ekta Kapoor deserves credit for reviving the Daayan Cult idea in Bollywood after a long gap of many years. While evil witches and adorable ones have always managed to grasp our attention alike, Koimoi brings to you the most memorable on-screen witches at the wake of Ek Thi Daayan’s release this Friday.

Shararat (2007-08)

Based on the 2002 American sitcom, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Shararat delved into the lives of three generations of witches living around mortals. The show starred veteran actress Farida Jalal in the pivotal role along with actresses Shruti Seth and Poonam Narula. The serial which was aired initially on Star Plus was movied to Disney Channel when its viewership was dissected to limited to mostly the youth. The serial went on win multiple awards and ran for four seasons.

The film was the directorial debut of Vishal Bhardwaj, who successfully ventured into the Children’s films scenario in India. Right in his first film, Vishal proved his worth and versatility. Shabana Azmi who played the role of the witch in the film, was beyond brilliant. The film challenged the belief of rural India on witches and witchcraft.

Starting off as a geeky young student at the mythical Witchcraft and Wizardry school of Hogwarts, her character evolves with the story as she turns into Harry’s stronghold and confidante over the next seven years at Hogwarts. Armed with a brilliant memory, her encyclopedic knowledge of spells saved Harry and Ron from their frequent dangerous expeditions.

The launch of Sony’s new television series managed a great deal of interest from the audiences. Fashioned on a supernatural theme, the story revolves around a love story which is under the dark spell of Anamika, a witch who wants to win over a man in love with another woman. Simran Kaur who looks gorgeous as the chudail Anamika, has to be one of most striking witches on Indian television.

Ek Thi Daayan is definitely not a new concept. Already worked on by Vishal Bhardwaj before, the film’s own co-producer, the idea has seen a substantial revamping before being used again as Daayan. Mysteries around the film’s story are still looming large with the main antagonist becoming difficult to place, this Friday’s release will definitely give to the Indian horror film scenario an elevated dimension!
