Bollywood actress Tabu was poured with bountiful love for her role in Sooraj Barjatya’s cult classic ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain.’ However, did you know her role almost landed with Madhuri Dixit – who ended up rejecting it for a surprising reason, and it has a Salman Khan connection! Scroll below to know the entire scoop.
Hum Saath Saath Hain boasted an ensemble cast, including Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Karisma Kapoor, Mohnish Bahl, Tabu, Alok Nath and Neelam Kothari among others. Starring the top-most stars of Bollywood, the film was the biggest blockbuster of the 90s and still holds an integral part in every Indian’s heart for inculcating rich family values.
Sooraj Barjatya, who had previously delivered a super-hit with Madhuri Dixit – Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! – wanted the actress to be a part of Hum Saath Saath Hain. Madhuri, once spilling beans on the same, revealed that Barjatya had asked her, “Which role should I put you in the film?” Given the script and timeline of events, she instantly rejected Sonali Bendre and Karisma Kapoor‘s roles as she felt it would be a step down from her previous film (HAHK) with the ace director. She was keen on Tabu’s role until she discovered a surprising twist.

In an old interview with Rediff.com, Madhuri Dixit said that Sooraj Barjatya was in a dilemma, and after a lot of discussion, the makers came to the conclusion that she should play eldest Bahu and Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan‘s bhabhi, Sadhna’s role. However, Madhuri said that she found it difficult to develop a devar-bhabhi bond with Salman after playing his love interest in Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! She also said that the scene that particularly made her uncomfortable was the one where Khan touched Sadhna’s feet and hugged her. “So there has to be this bhabhi-devar feeling between the two. But if you put me in Tabu’s place and visualize Salman touching my feet… I think people would have hooted in the theatres. And I think it’s right… because of HAHK, which was a love story between Salman and me,” Madhuri said.
For the unversed, Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan became one of the most loved on-screen pairs for their chemistry in the 1994 film ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! Directed by Sooraj Barjatya, the film also featured Mohnish Bahl, Alok Nath, and Anupam Kher.
