When Haseena Maan Jaayegi released in 1999, it was one of the coolest comedies to have hit the screens before the millennium drew to a close. Buoyed by the success of the film, director David Dhawan designed another comedy with his regular Govinda along with Sanjay Dutt. The film was Jodi No. 1 which released exactly two years later on 14th April 2001.
Outcome? Yet again, this ‘jodi’ was a hit at the box office.

From playing spoilt rich kids, Sanjay Dutt, Govinda played crooks in this comic caper. Incidentally, this was the second last film of Twinkle Khanna who was returning with Govinda after Joru Ka Ghulam. She did Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega post this and then bid adieu to the films. As for the second leading lady Monica Bedi, she made a comeback of sorts to the big league with Jodi No. 1 but her filmy career couldn’t progress much post this.

Coming to the film, it wasn’t as entertaining as Haseena Maan Jaayegi (which was a riot) but was still far better than most of the comedies that are seen today. The Chemistry between Govinda and Sanjay Dutt was evident all over again and they made sure that there were several rib-tickling moments on screen. In fact, the song ‘Ande Ka Funda’ became a chartbuster back then, though it hasn’t enjoyed much of a shelf life ever since. As for David Dhawan, he showcased his prowess as Director No. 1 all over again and maintained his hit record.
Made at a budget of around 10 crores, the film doubled its investment with a lifetime number of around 20 crores. The film did well with the masses as well as classes, hence proving to be an entertaining affair for one and all. In fact it also did much better than Haseena Maan Jaayegi which had a lifetime score of 15 crores, which was made at a similar budget.
