25th March 1994 – This was the day when Anil Kapoor and Govinda, two of the top stars back then, clashed at the box office and both emerged victorious. The films were Laadla and Khuddar.

The clash was special since this was one of the rare occasions when Govinda worked in an action film. While Anil Kapoor has still been working regularly in such masala entertainers, Govinda was known more for his comedies and hence it was a pleasant surprise for the audiences to see him in a cop avtar.

Both films also had a strong family angle to them as the hero and heroine were shown as a married couple with the leading lady boasting of a strong characterisation. Sridevi played a headstrong businesswoman in Laadla who marries her factory worker Anil Kapoor in order to humiliate him. Incidentally, Divya Bharti was to originally play her role but then Sridevi stepped in after her untimely death. On the other hand Karisma Kapoor played a blind young woman who ends up poisoning her own infant child in an accident. This brought a huge emotional appeal in both the films.

There were certain songs that emerged as huge chartbusters too. Laadla boasted of ‘Ladki Hai Kya’, a tapori song that was nailed by Anil Kapoor with Vaishnavi in a special appearance. On the other hand Khuddar had a love song ‘Tumsa Koyi Pyaara’ picturised on Govinda and Karisma Kapoor and is remembered till date.

Both films opened quite well at the box office and then went on to have a good run. While Laadla was a bigger success due to its strong family appeal as well, Khuddar too did quite good, especially in the interiors.

After a few years, Anil Kapoor and Govinda came together in a comedy Deewana Mastana (1998) and that film was a major success too.
