“Varun Forgets That He Is Varun” – Alia Bhatt

Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt have been Dharma Productions’ babies since Karan Johar launched them in Student Of The Year. Now after 3 films and 4 films respectively, the duo will be seen in a refreshingly earthly romantic comedy which is utterly rustic in taste.

In an interview to Koimoi when we asked Alia how much has Varun changed since then to now, the actress said, “I have known Varun since Student Of The Year and we have never lost touch ever. So I have known him as a friend as well. I was in constant touch with him during Main Tera Hoon too. Roles like that is his forte. Comedy is something the guy is born to do. But during this film I realized how much he has grown. For Varun now, a scene is like a character. He is not thinking like Varun anymore. In SOTY, he would think how can he make a scene better as Varun. He would want to use things he has learnt from Barry John. It’s good when that happens and a scene may look as a result of it. But the incredible bit is that he now thinks as Humpty which is a great achievement in just his third film. I sometimes realize that I may be talking in Hindi but I am thinking in English. Once you start thinking in Hindi, your body language transforms completely, the whole atmosphere changes! I don’t know if Varun is thinking in Hindi but for sure Varun is thinking as Humpty. He forgets that he is Varun. I only managed to do that in Highway and in bits and pieces in 2 States.”

Carrying forward the same, Varun added that the two are now way more comfortable with the pressure of performing off their head. He said, “My chemistry with Alia Bhatt in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is very different from Student Of The Year. In those days we were very nervous, very scared, what will people think and the pressure and all. Now we are very comfortable, surrendering completely to the characters. So everything is from the character’s perspective, discussion, improvisation. Alia is a very massy character in the film. She is very loud here all the time so it was very interesting doing my scenes with her now!”

A lot is being spoken about the film already and with the promotions going on rigorously, the film is grabbing a lot of attention of the audiences. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is a romantic comedy set in the heartland of the country and stars Siddharth Shukla alongside Varun and Alia. The film is all set to release on 11th July.
