Sujoy Ghosh, the director of the upcoming Vidya Balan-starrer, Kahaani, pays a tribute to Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, in the title track of his film.
The song Ami shotti bolchi celebrates the festivities of Kolkata by touring the city during the auspicious festival of Durga Puja. It takes viewers through the prime locations of the capital like Howrah Bridge, Kumartuli, Lal Bazar and others.
Says Sujoy Ghosh, “My film has two heroines – Vidya Balan and Kolkata, and this song was for the latter.”
Talking about how the song came about, Ghosh says, “The words, ‘Ami shotti bolchi’ (I’m speaking the truth) just popped out while chatting with Vishal (composer Vishal Dadlani) and became the starting point for a song that’s been shot on the streets of Kolkata.”
Commenting on his choice of having Usha Uthup as the singer for the title track, Sujoy adds, “I’ve always wanted Didi to sing for me but didn’t approach her till Vishal came up with this song. It’s trademark Kolkata and Didi is the voice of Kolkata.”
Kahaani is about a pregnant lady (played by Vidya Balan) who goes in search for her missing husband. It is scheduled to hit theaters on 9 March 2012.
