There have been many great onscreen couples who have always managed to just lighten the screen up. Be it Raj Kapoor-Nargis, Dilip Kumar-Vyjaynthimala, Amitabh Bachchan-Rekha or Shah Rukh-Kajol; there are many pairs which are just unforgettable and Bollywood is gracing the heights of fame owing to such super-hit couples. However, there have also been some fantastic male Jodi’s which have managed to entertain, laugh and also made us cry. Here are some of the best of the lot.

Amitabh Bachchan And Dharmendra

This is surely one of the most legendary onscreen partnerships. Their charisma, charm and ability to influence and complement each other was just too good! I have always enjoyed their work in Ram Balram, Chupke Chupke and ofcourse Sholay. Comic timing, emotional scenes, true value of friendship and most importantly high quality acting; this pair gave a superlative effort every time.

Though Chupke Chupke remains a lesser known movie, it still makes my funny bone tickle every time I watch it. Sholay was a legendary movie owing to the part played by these two. Even today the names Jai-Veeru symbolise friendship. Speaks volumes about the legacy of this pair.

Ashok Kumar And Pran

Though the lesser known pair of the list, they had acted enormously well in Victoria No. 203. Dadamoni has always been known for his versatility, while Pran supported him well with his rare display of comic timing. They play a pair of bumbling crooks, who have a heart of gold; yet always fall in trouble. They even earned Filmfare nominations for their act.

Amitabh Bachchan And Shashi Kapoor

Amitabh Bachchan has always shared a great rapport with Shashi Kapoor and had once described him as his favourite actor. Shashi Kapoor has immense acting ability with a versatile touch; something which augurs well with Amitabh Bachchan’s screen presence. The duo have acted in 11 movies together and each time, the viewers were left spellbound. I could only marvel at the different on-screen characters that both played every time on screen and yet managed to leave a lasting impression on the moviegoers!

Be the legendary Deewar where the two play brothers, Do Aur Do Paanch where they play smart crooks who try to outwit each other, Shaan and Suhaag where they play brothers or Akayla later where Shashi Kapoor enacts a senior role; there was a great chemistry between the two. Every scene carrying these two was such a great experience to watch and enjoy! One of the greatest male Jodi’s without doubt.

Sanjay Dutt And Govinda

This is another legendary pair, where they combined all genres together. Both have an excellent knack for comedy while action and tragedy comes naturally to both.

There movies were typically funny, with another romantic or dramatic element added to it. Haseena Maan Jaayegi is a cult classic for me, simple for the brilliant comic timing and amazing ‘broship’ Sanjay Dutt and Govinda have onscreen. Funny bone is tickled due to their great knowledge of comedy. It comes so naturally to both and its only possible due to the acting ability that these two possess.

Even Jodi No.1 and Ek Aur Ek Gyarah were super funny. Playing a funny, smart conman pair was never so easy until these two did it in their movies. We are yet to see such awesome comic pair, whom you felt were like real brothers.

Sanjay Dutt And Salman Khan

Both are very good friends and have a lot in common. Known to have a huge heart and most gracious in the film industry, their association dates back all the way to Saajan which had released in 1991. Their brilliant acting made the movie a grand hit. They later worked in movies such as Kainaat and Dus which were duds at the box office while Chal Mere Bhai was one of the higher earners. Typical story with this pair was a love triangle, wherein Salman would play a slightly naive and irresponsible younger brother while Sanjay Dutt would play a responsible and caring elder brother. Their 70mm screen partnership was recently successfully brought on the small screen via Bigg Boss season 5. It turned out to be a huge hit.

Amir Khan And Salman Khan

Though they worked in just one movie, it is an easy option to include them. Their characters were quite ironical in the film, somewhat similar to the course they would follow after it released. Salman and Amir played two smart, charming young men who would constantly tried to outwit each other. The movie of course was the one and only Andaz Apna Apna. Brilliant in its own way, it has since been established as a classic. Though efforts are on to bring both these superstars back on screen, I certainly relieve the old chemistry by watching this classic time and again.

Akshay Kumar And Sunil Shetty

This is my personal favourite and the duo has acted in whooping 18 films till date! As a child I used to love the action packed performances of both these actors and their coming together would be a must watch movie for me. Be it Waqt Hamara Hain, Sapoot, Mohra I still remember these movies scene-by-scene and dialogue-by-dialogue. Later both successfully transitioned into Comedy and gave huge hits in the form Hera Pheri series and several others. Again what mattered was how the two could complement each other so well be it Action, Romance or Comedy! They were competing on the screen while at the same time complementing each other. Never is there a dull moment when these two are on screen in any of their movies.

Akshay Kumar And Saif Ali Khan

A versatile pair which never had much box office success! Apart from Yeh Dillagi and Main Khiladi Tu Anari; they didn’t have the best of times at the box office. Yet, they have given great performances and Saif generally played a good-hearted bumbling fellow while Akshay has essayed the tough yet loving character. Both have had stupendous individual success, but as a duo though they did an admirable job; box office success wasn’t forthcoming.

Abhishek Bachchan And John Abraham

The recent one on the list, Abhishek-John are a bit different from the all the Jodi’s mentioned. Their Dostana was appreciated and their Dhoom style also fetched rave reviews. As a Gay couple, they had audience in splits while enemies trying to outwit each other; they kept the audience glued to the screen.

Amir Khan, Saif Ali Khan And Akshaye Khanna

Though this is a trio and they appeared in just one movie, their association was just unforgettable! I mean who can forget Dil Chaahta Hain? It redefined the concept of male friendship onscreen. Everything about the movie was so perfect and so amazing, that it has established itself as a cult classic in the minds of the audience. The movie gave a direction to the careers of all three actors and established them in the industry.

Often overlooked, male Jodi’s have had stupendous success at the box office. Though I may have missed out on some Jodi’s, the trend in Bollywood has always focussed on romances and not acting.

Through this article, attempt is being made to identify the basic meaning of acting and a Jodi. It need not to be a “romantic” Jodi, as long as the actors complement each other!
