It is definitely not the end of the year but some things have been set straight by most of our celebrated faces by the end of 2013’s third quarter. Yes, 2013 till date has been testament to some huge high-points and some majorly disappointing showdowns, ones which has kind of taken the breath away each time. Be it successful films like a Race 2, Chennai Express, Aashiqui 2 or a Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani or surprise debacles like Ghanchakkar, Lootera, Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara and Besharam et al this year has definitely been a tough roller coaster ride for one and all. Yet amidst all these terrible loopholes, some actresses have made their presence felt and some just got disillusioned in the clutter of many faces.
Let’s take a Box Office Round Up of the year so far and see which Desi girl scored magic with her ventures and which Junglee billi needs to mend up ways and hope for a better tomorrow.
Note: The Top 10 selections are not compiled on the basis of the number of films each heroine was a part of or the average collections of their respective films, but is simply an addition of the box office collections of the actress’ movie!
#1: Deepika Padukone
A success tale that started last year with an immensely refreshing Cocktail and some brilliantly strategized brand endorsements definitely paved way for a bigger year for Deepika Padukone right at the inception of 2013. But no one could ever imagine that the year would turn out so out-rightly humongous for this actress that Deepika suddenly leaped into the A-listed bracket as the most bankable face today, one who can shoulder a massy film right on her own accord. She raced past her contemporaries with a 100 crore stealer in Race 2, a 190 crore show stopper in YJHD and a record setting Chennai Express that ended 3 Idiot’s heroic record by cashing in around a mammoth 226.70 crores. While her performances gained her immense acclaim, be it the shady Alina in Race 2 or the dimpled nerd in YJHD and the sultry yet gorgeous Meenamma in Chennai Express, Deepika Padukone stormed the theatres giving a megastar of the caliber of Shah Rukh Khan a run for his own money. And today as she stands as the only Indian actor to have created history by making an earth shattering record collection of over 500 crores in a year and still to come, Deepika Padukone stands as the ultimate Bollywood Empress who has been unleashed to rule the arena for a while!
#2: Sonam Kapoor
Sonam Kapoor has been tagged a fashionista more than being an actress. Her dressing sense has been appreciated and applauded eons more than her acting skills but when this Kapoor beti decided to shun her critics, she did it the right way. With a surprise hit in the form of the emotionally driven Raanjhanaa and a stellar cameo performance in this one of this year’s finest films made (Bhaag Milkha Bhaag), Sonam has rightfully cemented her place in Bolly-ville with her acting prowess today! With Raanjhanaa shelling in 62.75 crores and BMB crossing the 100 crore milestone with ease, Sonam delivered and how!
#3: Sonakshi Sinha
Breaking away from the imprisonment of being called a showpiece, Sonakshi dared to try something refreshingly new in Motwane’s period drama set in the 1950s but Lootera, on the whole failed to strike a chord with the audience. Mainly crafted for the intelligentsia, Lootera could not understand the audience pulse and hence failed to deliver at the box office, despite strong overall content and was declared a dud with a collection of just 30.50 crores. And while many were expecting OUATIMD to sizzle with aplomb, it fizzled out instead as the 65 crore mark just added on the dampener that our otherwise commercial star was going through. Better luck, next time, babe!
#4: Shraddha Kapoor
Surprise! Surprise! The latest and the most surprising element in the entire list definitely needs to be Shraddha Kapoor. The Luv Ka The End star, who could never rise above the shackles of poor acting and emoting skills somehow struck gold with Mohit Suri’s take on love and romance in Aashiqui 2. Although the film did not boast of stellar performances with both its lead protagonists left to ham every now and then, the emotional connect helped Aashiqui 2 have the recall value. With audiences queuing up in large numbers at the theatres, the film stands tall with a mammoth ROI of 612% as the film netted in about 85.40 crores at the box office, despite being made on a shoe string budget.
#5: Kareena Kapoor
Our lovely Bebo had somewhat seen a dull year so far, with only one release in the form of Prakash Jha’ss Satyagraha. Although a hard hitting film, one that is usually a trademark Jha film, Kareena Kapoor failed to mesmerize audiences with her portrayal of a journalist but given the ensemble cast involved, Satyagraha scored in some average figures of around 67.85 crores whereas it was expected to be even bigger. Nevertheless, our dearest Bebo, now Kareena Kapoor Khan needs to give her personal life a little break and buckle up before someone nudges her position away.
#6: Parineeti Chopra
Much ahead of her famous cousin, this little Chopra has been taking baby steps into filmdom and my oh my, she has managed to gift us with some superlative performances and some delectably appreciating films that are commercial yet classy. Being pitted against your own sister might be tough and when your sister is a bigger star, it becomes even tougher,. But Parineeti Chopra held on to her boots as Shuddh Desi Romance changed the entire romantic scenario and introduced love reverberating with the rhythm of contemporary new age romance. Despite strong competition from Zanjeer, SDR managed to hold well throughout, collecting about 46.80 crores.
#7: Kangana Ranaut
She might not have been adept at emoting with finesse on screen, but when she took on to be the gangster’s wife this time, she gave it her all. The gangster connection has always worked well with this leggy actress be it her debut film, OUATIM or the recently released Shootout at Wadala. The only reason we kept Kangana Ranaut below Parineeti, despite earning more than Pari’s film was the fact that while our Ishaqzaadi rocked a strong lead, Kangana’s role lacked meat compared to her! Yet the film based on Manya Surve’s life story had Kangana in a very brief and crisp role where she delivered with aplomb. And while Balaji made its way to the bank, SAW cashed in 62 crores at the BO with eased comfort.
#8: Anushka Sharma
Bollywood regained effervescence with this newbie hitting the screens few years back and even today, that hasn’t changed. A charmer of sorts, Anushka Sharma’s Bijlee is naughty, full on spunk and totally zatak! A film on land scam is definitely difficult but with Vishal Bharadwaj at the helm of things, it became a lot easier. But Matru ki Bijlee Ka Mandola could not quite get the grip as it made just about 42 crores, recovering its investment and yielding some amount of profit. But it did help Anushka gain a lot as she signed on to play titular role in Rajkumar Hirani’s P.K opposite Aamir Khan!
#9: Vidya Balan
She has been the ultimate empress at the box office for the past three years now and with her bold maneuvers and Dirty Pictures, she just zoomed to the top as the only bankable actress today. But with a strong struggle with Deepika now, Vidya Balan seems to have lost touch this year. Set out to make a different type of comedy, Ghanchakkar could not perform as expected given the starry names of a Balan and a Hashmi involved. And with Vidya’s other films making an impactful presence on both critics and the box office, Ghanchakkar was just an average fare which brought in around 38.40 crores. Disappointing because Vidya doesn’t really deserve to be on 9! Wish she made some better choices!
#10: Priyanka Chopra
If Vidya was disappointing, Piggy Chops was disastrous with just a solo release this year till now. One would not have expected our lovely Jhilmil to sign up for an utterly gibberish and nonsensical thriller like Zanjeer but when she did, she forgot the plethora of films that she is accredited to. God wonder what happened to our gorgeous diva that she kind of resorted to doing just bland item songs and serve as a mere showpiece in a film that boasted of almost nothing. Pitted against her own sister, Priyanka Chopra could not quite make advantage of her star persona as Zanjeer sank without a trace and SDR sailed through with mesemeric numbers. With a collection as low as just 15 crores and some utterly irritating item numbers (she does look hot in them btw!), last year’s Heroine par excellence has found a wrong footing. Hopefully this is just the lull before the storm!
P.S.: Watch Out For Katrina Kaif
With not even a singular release this year till now, Katrina Kaif might have missed a place on our coveted list but as we say it, the game’s not over yet! With Katrina planning to end the year in a Dhoom with Dhoom 3 and the Dhoom makers making every possible move to make Dhoom:3 the biggest cutting edge espionage crime thriller of all times, it would not be a surprise if Katrina triumphs with her trump card right towards the end of the year. Without much a do, D:3 has been one of the most anticipated films this year and given the amount of promotions the YRF team has planned, nudging across Chennai Express would not be difficult. While most people might call it all over, Dhoom 3 can be the perfect wonder for our lovely Kat who would definitely then stand out as a top contender on our list as well! But if she does, her on-off rivalry with Deepika will definitely hit a new plateau!
