He may not be a part of the famous Khan trio. However, Irrfan Khan is managing to throw a surprise or two at a regular interval, and how. The biggest one was seen over the weekend gone by when his international film Life Of Pi, despite being made in English, managed to trounce biggies like Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar.

“Both films were expected to enjoy a field run in their second weekend,” comments an observer, “When they were fighting it out for the screen space for over a month, it was mainly for the first week. It was felt obvious that in the second week there won’t be any competition whatsoever as no Hindi film was releasing then. It was also a given that after the initial clash, Shah Rukh Khan as well as Ajay Devgn would rake in moolah big time in a continued run that would last till the release of Talaash. However out of nowhere Irrfan came and did something unbelievable.”

This was evidenced in the manner in which Life Of Pi went on to earn much more than the other two Diwali biggies. Though these were in their second week, still a film like Life Of Pi was hardly considered as a challenge. However Irrfan has scored with the audience, and how!

“Though in the film it is Suraj Sharma who has a larger screen time, Irrfan is there right from start to the finish. Also, at least in Indian market it was Irrfan as the film’s selling point. His name is spelling quality and for the niche audience, it is turning out to be a gift indeed,” a veteran filmmaker adds.

With films like Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 2, D-Day and Bullet Raja in the pipeline, even 2013 is looking like an eventful year ahead for this ‘other’ Khan!
