What are stars without their fans! Then again, why do fans have to keep arguing over the originality of movies starring their favorite actors?! Every time we think a masterpiece is on its way, we, by design, end up finding out a source of inspiration bordering on plagiarism.
Jab Tak Hai Jaan came up with a so called original trailer that, many believe, has been droopily taken from The Motorcycle Diaries “Apertura”. But that can be called just another of those thousand coincidences that keep occurring in the Hindi Film Industry. What will you have to say about the number Challa which is visibly drawn heavy inspiration from Eagle – Eye Cherry – “Save Tonight”?

With this year’s Shah Rukh Khan Project already forming its souk shape, we have the other big Khan gearing up with Talaash to be released this month 30th. The movie stars Aamir Khan and has Reema Kagti as the director. Controversies over Sanjay Gupta’s allegations vis–a–vis Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara being inspired by the 1985’s Fandango made Kagti lash out on Gupta in public. Sanjay Gupta has been heard retorting saying Reema Kagti did it to simply create buzz for Talaash.

There were speculations that the release of the film had been postponed due to its noticeable similarities with Kahaani, starring Vidya Balan. But the Talaash team had made it clear that these were mere rumors and there is nothing of slightest truth in it. Well, team Talaash can say whatever they want, for a commoner there are stark similarities between a Talaash and a Kahaani posters. The poster with Vidya with the fades of a city still can easily come in to your mind while looking at the Aamir poster with the similar fades of city still, of course with different cities!
Apparently, Kagti’s psychological thriller has been inspired by the storyline of a Tamil thriller, Anniyan (2005). Major inspirations that have been drawn, as per rumors doing the round since Talaash’s pre release days also suggest it has borrowed from Identity (2003) and Shutter Island (2010), which are two Hollywood movies starring John Cusack and Leonardo Di Caprio respectively. Identity is about strangers stuck in a motel being killed off one by one. Shutter Island is about an investigation that goes way beyond the normal calls of duty. Identity itself has stark similarities with the 1965 Bollywood production Gumnaam, a film by Raja Nawathe and script by Dhruva Chatterjee, starring Manoj kumar.
We know that Aamir is quite serious about his projects as far as originality and marketing tricks are concerned. So maybe it is too soon to decide on whether it has been inspired or not. Either ways, all these speculation in the media is doing Talaash a lot of good by keeping the mystery alive.
