Ekta Kapoor deserves the highest praise, firstly, for making The Dirty Picture, a film on sex and sleaze, so unapologetically and, secondly, for promoting it so fabulously. It is because of the lovely promotion and marketing of the film that it opened to full and near-full houses in many cinemas. Otherwise, a woman-oriented subject with Vidya Balan in the role of the main protagonist should’ve opened to not more than 40-50% houses. No doubt, the Ooh la la song also worked its magic but one cannot overlook the brilliant marketing of the film.
While on Ekta Kapoor, the lady seems to have made a profitable business out of producing sex films. First, her Kya Kool Hai Hum, a sex comedy, worked very well at the box-office. Then, she produced Love Sex Aur Dhokha, which also clicked. Her next sex film, Ragini MMS, also worked at the box-office. The Dirty Picture is her fourth foray into the sex genre of films. Again, this one seems to be heading towards the hit mark. Looks like Ekta seems to have the correct feel of the audience’s pulse as far as adult films are concerned – just like she had for television serials.
