Shahid Kapoor’s intense tale of love, Kabir Singh has gripped the nation and more than a love story, everyone is intrigued by the flaws of Kabir’s character and his passion for his love, Preeti, played by Kiara Advani. One can surely recall movies like Salman Khan’s Tere Naam and Shah Rukh Khan’s Darr, in which the lover undergoes the path of self-destruction or extremism to get their love.

Let’s take a look at some Bollywood movies, which showed the self-destructive or extremism mode of the lovers:

Kabir Singh

Apart from the backlash from a certain section, Kabir Singh is receiving an overwhelming response from the majority of the audience. The movie depicts the love story of an impulsive surgeon, Kabir, who falls in love with Preeti. He eventually gets caught up in the trap of alcoholism and drug addiction, after discovering that Preeti is forced to marry someone else. While some of the viewers are bashing the movie for glorifying the use of doping substances and toxic masculinity, most of them are loving the character for his passion and relatability.

Raanjhanaa

Raanjhanaa marked Dhanush’s big Bollywood debut and touched the viewers with his portrayal of an innocent yet obsessive lover, Kundan. Since childhood, Kundan worships his one-sided love Zoya (Sonam Kapoor), whose Muslim family is orthodox and reluctant to allow any Hindu guy to marry their daughter. Just to impress Zoya’s family, Kundan crazily tries to impress her family but all goes in vain as Zoya is sent out of town for studies. After getting aware of Zoya’s marriage with other guy named Jasjeet (Abhay Deol), Kundan tries sinful methods and obstructs the wedding, only to regret afterward.

Kunal Kemmu was introduced as a hero with this dark thriller, which had the shades of love, revenge and intruded the world of pornography. Happily married couple Kunal (Kunal Kemmu) and Renuka (Smiley Suri) books for the honeymoon suite in a hotel to celebrate their first night. Police arrests the couple for interrogation, as the intimate night was recorded and uploaded on a porn website. Shocked Renuka commits suicide and Kunal gets into the revenge mode to avenge the death of her love.

Tere Naam

Back in 2003, Tere Naam and Salman Khan’s Radhe was a sensation amongst the movie buffs. One of the best performances by Khan, the movie is about a guy named Radhe, who is rowdy and a person with I don’t a fu*k attitude. His life goes through a transition when he falls in love with a conservative girl, Nirjala (Bhumika Chawla). Although a bit rude in behaviour, Radhe is good at heart with a true love for Nirjala, but eventually ends up at a mental asylum.

Devdas

As Devdas, Shah Rukh Khan delivered one of the breakthrough performances. After completing law graduation in London, Devdas returns India to marry his childhood love Paro, played by Aishwarya Rai. Things get darker when Devdas’ own family rejects the marriage proposal. Further, Devdas gets trapped in alcoholism and emotional deterioration and dies a tragic death.

Darr

Darr
Darr

Although one of the memorable performances by Shah Rukh Khan, Darr received backlash as it promoted the stalking and glorified the desire or lust more than love. It’s a tale of one-sided love, in which obsessive and psychotic Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) tries to win over his college crush Kiran (Juhi Chawla) and goes extreme in getting her. Despite her marriage with Sunil (Sunny Deol), Rahul refuses to give up on her and eventually gets into bloodshed.

Anjaam

Once again, Shah Rukh Khan managed to impress the audience as an obsessive and psychotic lover in another tale of one-sided love. A wealthy industrialist Vijay (Shah Rukh Khan) falls in love for Shivani Chopra (Madhuri Dixit), only to get rejected by her. Vijay discovers that Shivani is already married to another man Ashok (Deepak Tijori), but refuses to back down. Reaching to the extreme point, Vijay also ends up killing Shivani’s husband.
