The income-tax department has moved the Bombay high court, challenging an order passed by the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) in 2006 in favour of Salman Khan in an alleged tax evasion case. The I-T department has charged the actor with evading tax to the tune of Rs.4 crore. In the assessment year 2000-2001, Salman had declared his income as Rs. 9.32 crore. The I-T department’s contention was that his actual income for the period was Rs. 13.61 crore. Salman challenged the assessment order before the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), who granted him relief. The I-T department then filed an appeal in the ITAT, which ruled in Salman’s favour. The I-T department has now urged the high court to set aside the ITAT order and sought a stay on the implementation of the ITAT order.
