“Raja Natwarlal Is Not Some Tacky Mass Film Or Ocean’s 12” – Emraan Hashmi

When Emraan Hashmi got noticed in Dibaker Banerjee’s Shanghai, one did not find out of place. He is an actor who has made a name out of sleaze show, smooches and glossy B-grade films. And still the actor oozes class in his taste of niche projects. Probably none of them ticked off too well at the box office, be it Ek Thi Daayan or Ghanchakkar, but Hashmi’s potential isn’t easy to ignore.

Coming to his next film which has a very garishly dressed Emraan, in an interview we asked the actor how does he strike a balance between niche and massy, retaining his caliber and individuality in films like Raja Natwarlal. Hashmi responds, “It is necessary to strike the right blend of both and hope we have accomplished it in this film. Because this film is mass element with a certain amount of class in it. There is a certain amount of finesse in the way the project has been presented. Sometimes mass becomes tacky. I have done it sometimes. Mass with a certain amount finesse, with the kind of clothes, the locations, makes the difference. Raja Natwarlal is a class product with mass elements in its heart. It is emotional at core, and dramatic. It is not a frivolous or a superficial film. This isn’t Ocean’s 12. Though there is the 420 element in the film but actually there are intense emotions of romance, revenge and persona vendetta.”

Carrying on the same, Emraan added, “I have started on mass films. My audience base is a mass audience base so far. So I try to cater to the niche because it’s essential for an actor to cater to both side of the spectrum. India has a very complicated audience base where a few have taste for evolved cinema whereas others love maar dhaar and dialoguebaazi. People love both. Hence I alternate between a Raja Natwarlal and Shanghai.”
