This is a very very long article so we’re going to break it up in parts; the rest of the parts will follow)

Part 1: Movies, movies and more movies…

(i)Year Interrupted

Year 2009 was a horrible one if not worse… What saved it? Amir Khan’s ‘Gajini’ (released at the end of 2008) and ‘3 Idiots’ (released in 2009).

Gajini made Rs.30 crore in it’s first week (the highest ever!!) and 3 Idiots made Rs.45-47 crore in it’s first week and is still rocking the box office.

Before this there hadn’t been much to cheer about, however Yash Chopra’s New York and Love Aaj Kal (Saif Ali Khan’s maiden home production), did exceedingly well; and then came Salman Khan’s Wanted that set single-screen cinemas ablaze. Yes… Wanted was a sensation among the cheaper-priced single screen cinemas.

But Salman is unpredictable – so unpredictable, that just weeks later, his Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna didn’t last decently even a week in cinemas, with producers being forced to put it up on the DTH platform after just four days in theatres. This move prompted panic in the industry and the producers called an emergency meeting to discuss the issue. But that is Salman Khan – issue-ridden when he has a hit, and even more so when he has a flop.

(ii) Releases

Did you know how many movies released last year?? Take a wild guess…
A total of 242 films(13 films more than 2008) , out of which 104 were dubbed in Hindi, 6 in English and one in English-Hindi.

(iii) Hits and Flops

Super hit : 3 Idiots (obviously). Then there was 2010- pralay ki shuruat (dubbed), Love Aaj Kal , Slumdog Crorepati (dubbed), Slumdog Millionare, New York, Wanted, Dev D, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, All the Best.

Movies that didn’t do so well : Blue, Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna, What’s Your Raashee?, Kurbaan, Chandni Chowk To China, Luck By Chance, Kambakkht Ishq, Short Kut, Do Knot Disturb, London Dreams and Aladin. Now these were really really bad!!

So much for now, but stay tuned for more…
