Social media was flocked with criticism when the trailer of Mary Kom released. Ofcourse there was talk about no Manipuri actor and how Priyanka Chopra’s diction all through seemed forced and incorrect. Talking to Koimoi on the same, débutant director Omung Kumar defended with, “It did bother me. But they don’t know what they are talking about. There is a gradual rise of her. Mary Kom doesn’t speak Hindi too well. But I am not making a Manipuri film. We have kept the language Hindi, using Manipuri in bits and pieces. People will talk. Once people watch the film, they will keep quiet. Because they’ll love it. It’s not just the story of every woman but anyone who is striving against odds.”
Adding to the same, Kumar elaborated, “I am trying to make a film of a girl from Manipur’s village who rose to success but I want everyone to see the film too. Yes the dialogue in the end of the trailer is very forceful, I agree. But Mary Kom speaks very tooti phooti Hindi, and to capture nine ten years of journey from her being a small girl to the time she goes to China, we have graduated in the diction through the film. We know what we are doing. We are not pagal obviously. Since Manipuri is a very unknown language for most, it was incorporated very smartly. It’s not like Punjabi that everyone will understand. We have used small words that are understandable and doesn’t disturb the film at all. “
Mary Kom directed by Omung is all set to release on 5th September.
