Ishaan Khatter and Ananya Pandey starrer Khaali Peeli has been on the receiving end of a massive backlash. It was the song Beyonce Sharma Jayegi that triggered the netizens, who labelled it racist. Talking about the row, film’s director Maqbool Khan apologised to everyone offended. But he disagrees that the song is racist. Below is everything that Khan has to say about the same.

Beyonce Sharma Jayegi fell into the lap of controversy for its lyrics. Not just using Beyoncé’s name but netizens point out the usage of word goriye. And referring to the context called the song racist and problematic. The video has triggered the netizens who have disliked it on YouTube rapidly.

Reacting to the fiasco is Maqbool Khan, director of Ishaan Khatter and Ananya Panday’s Khaali Peeli. Talking about Beyonce Sharma Jayegi, as per Hindustan Times, the filmmaker said, “First, without any hesitation or excuses we want to apologise to anyone offended. We assure you that the lyric in question was never intended racially. The term ‘goriya’ has been so often and traditionally used in Indian songs to address a girl, that it didn’t occur to any of us to interpret it in the literal manner.”

“Also the comparison with Beyonce is simply meant to be a street-smart guy flattering a girl who is trying to impress that her dancing/performance is worth comparing to even Beyonce who we all see as the final word, the epitome of talent, beauty, performance, style and attitude. We are all huge fans, and there was never any question of disrespect,” Maqbool Khan added.

Meanwhile, it is also said that the makers are planning to rework on the lyrics of Beyonce Sharma Jayegi due to one more reason. The pop sensation has copyrighted her name for commercial used. Reportedly, the Khaali Peeli makers have no permission for the same.

Khaali Peeli, produced by Ali Abbas Zafar is all set release ln Zeeplex on October 2.
