Going strong in his 45thyear, the Padma Shri awardee is an icon for millions and is counted amongst the fittest actors of Bollywood. A wholesome entertainer Akshay’s ride from super fast action hero of his early flicks to the later entertaining comedies is truly praiseworthy. The martial art pro with genuine charms has renewed altogether within a span of few years to Mr. Laugh Riot with slapstick comedies pocketing strong and notable films. And still he continues to experiment with different genres, Drama and Romance included.
So here is a look at Akshay’s most notable films which have left an indelible impression in the hearts of the masses and helped him carve a rightful stature in the world of glamour.
Khiladi 420 (2000):
Akshay’s personal favourite, the movie had dangerous stunts of him standing high on a plane thousand feet above the earth. He considers it riskiest endeavor he had ever taken. Akshay was paired opposite Mahima Chaudhry in the action film centering round a love story. The film counted as one of the remarkable action films of the star cemented his position as the daring actor of the Hindi film industry.
Mohra (1994):
The film was a blockbuster and was nominated in 9 Filmfare categories. Akshay was seen in the Inspector Amar avatar along with Nasseeruddin Shah, Sunil Shetty and Raveena Tandon. The film loaded with fight and confrontation scenes belongs to the era of Akshay’s raw action movies. He became a sought after name in the industry with the positive film reviews.
Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995):
An apt name for Akshay himself, the film is the third in the Khiladi series. It is another of Kumar’s trademark action flicks. The film was a roaring success and Akshay was seen in the double role of a loyal servant and justice seeking Inspector. The film became the seventh highest earning film of 1995. The pairing of Akshay and Mamta became quite popular and helped the film overall.
Dhadkan (2000):
A passionate love story, Akshay changes track emoting the doting husband to Shipa Shetty in the film. He received a nomination in IIFA Awards’ Best Actor category for his impressive performance. And for critics, it was a welcome change seeing Akshay donning the sensitive role with pure simplicity.
Jaanwar (1999):
With this movie, audiences got to saw a more humane and emotionally bent Akshay in the role of a protective father. The film helped in reviving his career which was going through a rough phase at that point. The movie was a box office success and exhibited Akshay’s capablility of portraying mellowed roles highlighting his softer side.
Namastey London(2007):
Akshay’s remarkable performance as the deeply rooted Indian, Arjun from aremote village was highly appreciated. The film managed a good draw in the box office and became a super hit. Many critics held it as Akshay’s coming of age role. The onscreen pairing of Katrina and Akshay was well received by the audiences.
Hera Pheri(2000):
Considered one of the best comedies of Bollywood, the film began Akshay’s long association with director Priyadarshan. Hailed by critics a ‘laughter riot’ this comedy of miscommunication won Akshay the Best Supporting Actor. With Hera Pheri, Akshay turned to his eventual genre: comedy. He continued in the sequel of the film, Phir Hera Pheri (2006).
Bhool Bhulaiya (2007):
Yet another successful pairing of Priyadarshan and Akshay saw a box office wonder. Akshay’s perfect comic timing and insightful parts as the doctor was a delight to the eye. That he has evolved as an actor over the time was reflected in his earnest portrayal of Dr. Aadesh Shrivastav. The film did help in rising Akshay’s position as one the bankable stars of the industry.
Housefull(2010) Housefull 2 (2012):
The Housefull series is a hugely successful comic venture. Akshay’s crude humor ethics has been proved time and again. In both the movies it was his grand presence which has carried the films to success despite of the mixed reviews from critics. In spite of the large star cast, Akshay holds his ground confidently not to be outdone by any other.
Rowdy Rathod(2012):
Full on action and comedy equals’ total entertainment and when the Khiladi leads it, then it is bang on a blockbuster! That was exactly the reception of the Akshay starring film. Dressed in colourful garbs, picking on cheesy lines it was Akshay’s mustached call to let out the madness. The film is a massive hit and it jolly well reinforces the position that Akshay yields in present day Bollywood.
Although Akshay’s recent release Joker has failed to work wonders, he holds a cult status among his contemporaries. And with his upcoming releases, OMG Oh My God!, Hera Pheri’s 3rd installment which is titled as Hera Pheri 4 , Khiladi 786, Once Upon a Time Mumbai 2 Again, Naam Hai Boss and Special Chabbis, he might just accentuate his rank further.
